97 Civic HX
Hi Ever1. I just got a 97 CIVC HX from my dad. I'm using it for commute and I would like to get your input. Right now it has 192K Miles on it. The only thing that was done was when Honda replace the tranny a while back. The car is pretty much stock. I know that I need to replace the timing belt and water pump, but I was thinking of doing a swap. What kind of engine can I put it? Im leaving it as a automatic tranny I read the sticky on top but most of it is for manual tranny. Like I said I just want it for commute with AC since I commute 1,000 Miles/week. Also any siggestion on where can I buy the engine
there are auto B series out there but its not worth it at all. the auto tranny will put a huge limit as to what you can do. if youre not going to do a 5spd conversion than id suggest just keeping it stock and keep up with the maintenence.

just by you stating that you want to keep the car as an automatic, i'm going to tell you don't waste your time looking for a motor. to do a motor swap on a auto b-series just isn't worth the time and money.
i will say this, though i wouldn't do it, have seen auto turbo d-series motors. maybe this is something for you to consider.

Thanks for the input. I though it be nice to put a B series since I cross altamont and Niles everyday. My Volvo is turbo and I have no problem going up hill but I just hate putting alot of mileage on a $35K car. Plus it eats alot of gas
it's surprising how many people on honda-tech seem unable to grasp the concept of a daily driver. if you aren't putting 30 lbs. of boost on your lsvtec swap, then you really shouldn't swap, or that is the sentiment i see here a lot.
you should look at a b20 swap. they are fairly cheap, will pretty much bolt into your car without much modification, have more torque than other b series engines, and would be great to drive daily without much modification. if you really wanted to go crazy you could slap an i/h/e on there and call it a day. it would give you a pretty fun engine that would not cause any worry about reliability, which seems like it would be paramount in your situation.
and it would work well with the factory automatic because it wouldn't destroy the gears in the tranny. honda transmissions are great for gas mileage. but there are a few people who try to turbo their car or build their car and use the factory automatic. you will run into an exploded gearbox if you try to build an auto because the little parts inside the transmission weren't made to handle more power than they were mated to.
hope this helps...
