Figured I'd share my long term "Go-Cart" plans...

Figured I'd share my long term "Go-Cart" plans...
For as long as I have been into turbo's, I have wanted to build a turbocharged offroad go-cart. I didn't want to build just some un-suspended wagon with a motor, so I've been researching for someone out there that has already built somewhat of what I was thinking. I didn't want something as large as a sandrail, but also didn't want something uncomfortably small.
Then I came upon the company called Edge go-carts located in Australia. Not only have they built something that was roughly what I was looking for, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. They sell plans for all of thier go-carts that allow the customer to build every part themselves if they have the means/wanted too. However, they also sell individual parts, and complete carts for everyone in between. Considering I work at a metal fab shop, I have the perfect means to build this chassis for just the cost of material.
What's so different about their carts may you ask? take a look:
- Street bike motor (600-1300cc!)
- Insane independant suspension
- Small enough to fit on a simple cargo trailer, and not take up an entire garage.
- If built almost entirely by myself, it's really not all that expensive.
- Pretty much a Baja buggy yet at a fraction of the cost.
So what are my plans exactly?...
I will be building the "Barracuda" chassis with the help of their plans, but purchase the rear CV type suspension from Edge directly due to the complexity of the parts. I will be using an 03 CBR600 motor and tranny that my buddy has parted out of a trashed frame. I would love to utilize a larger 1000cc motor, but I'd also like to keep the weight down as much as I can. I will be utilizing almost all of the factory electrical system off the bike except for the ECU. I havn't decided which ECU yet, but most likely it'll be a motec or fast. As for the turbo setup, I'll use a GT28R along with a small air-air IC system. I think the turbo will really make up for torque less 600, and make the cart insanely fast! As far as power goals, I think 200whp would be reliable and fast as hell in a 1000lb chassis.

I'm very excited to start this project, eventhough I know it probubly won't be completed for at least 4 years. It will be a test of my fabrication skills, and should provide all new challenges that make building custom vehicles fun.

I doubt it. It's going to be a while before I begin this. I'm still in the initial planning stages right now. After all I need to finish up my CRX first

In terms of a go-cart builds, this is definetly going to be priced on the high end thats for sure. But overall, I think I can build the complete buggy for less than $9,000. The main expense would be the rear suspension assembily which comes out to be about $3,400 plus shipping, and the coilover shocks.

If you look at the other pic, he has his legs almost completely stretched out. They also say it'll fit someone up to 6'7" (I'm 6'2") with no problems. After all, the best thing about building it myself is that I can position everything where I want it.

It very well might be. I just don't want the turbo to kill the topend flow of the motor. I might try the 28 and see how it performs, and if it's a little too laggy down grade to the 25.

I've always had the desire to do this type of project as well. I wanted something that could do quad trails, but give me a buggy layout. This is a bit wide for that, and the cost is DEFINITELY beyond what I was after.
Good luck with that though...it'll end up fun.

(We did ours with a combination of a cheap Lincoln MIG machine (sometimes even fluxcore), a Miller Synchrowave 250 and a harbor freight TIG machine at the track and stuff. Oh, a plasma cutter really makes life easy on this stuff, too.

For sure man! I plan to take the buggy on 4 wheeling trips, to our sand dunes in southern Colorado, and up to the mountains. I live pretty much on the edge of the rocky mountains, and also have family up in Marble Colorado which has TONs of trails to explore. This isn't something that I plan on building and never use.

i like the asthetics of this one a little better, not as many sharp points.
mini rails look sooo fun though! and you can credit the honda odyssey for most of the early innovation in that area too haha

i have been looking for a salvage titled smartcar to put a gxsr motor in,

Well, we've been jumping through hoops trying to get a good head ( long story involving wrong cam caps), but I got a new head and it iwll go on after I get back from tuning in Vegas this weekend Then turbo!!
