Default Is this possible?

Sorry if it's been covered, search didn't turn up much.

I botched a downshift, 5 -> 3, missed the throttle so it had to catch up when I released the clutch from about 3000 rpm to 6500 rpm. Right after a CEL came on. Dealer said it was an over rev and it apparently said to 6200 rpm.

Can you mechanically over-rev the car to an RPM below the rev-limit of the car? Doesn't really make sense to me. I know what I did isn't good for the driveline, but how was it an over rev? was it just the rate of change of engine speed?

Thanks.

Can you elaborate on this?

What he's describing sounds to me like he simply abruptly downshifted to 3rd gear, which can cause a some driveline shock, but wouldn't be what I'd refer to as an "over-rev".

What was the CEL actually indicating?

How much damage can this do?

I've driven the car probably 15000 km since, but never got around to asking the question. Car runs as strong as ever.

I never got the exact CEL number or description as I had just rushed in at the end of the dealers work day and asked them to read and clear it.

The tech said "over rev to 6200 rpm." I said "How's that possible, my rev limit is over 8000 rpm" then he shrugged and said "are you sure it's that high?", so naturally I just left.

Unless you physically broke something in the driveline, it shouldn't have caused any problems.

Well he missed the rev match, so the RPMS were probably pretty low, it's pretty much just the motor going into "shock I guess"... going back up to 6200 against it's will for better terms of words... If you don't here any abnormal noises or notice any changes in performance they you're probably be alright...

If it's running, and correctly, you're lucky.

A friend of mine went from top of fourth, back into third in his DSM... The results weren't pretty. I have some pictures somewhere, I'll find them.

Well thanks guys. I'm not too worried about it, car runs fine, I was just curious about what had happened.

You can definitely do some damage by missing a shift. What you friend did, however, is totally different than what I did.

Exactly. That was an over-rev situation, while yours was not.

not really on topic, but I've mechanically over-revved a Honda engine, and the motor was and still is fine. (went from 5th and missed 4th, and put it in 2nd, DOH!)

I've also seen one over-revved with nitrous that didn't come out fine. The guy that did that one knew right away though.

I'm with the others, I think you are quite alright. As long as the car is running good still.

Wow, touchy are we? I point out that your question had already been answered by the OP, twice, and you feel the need to try to disparage me?

You are the one that made yourself look silly, I only pointed it out to you. It's a small man who needs to denigrate others to make up for their own mistakes.

Dude, grow up.
