Brake Question - Rebuilding Caliper *See Pic*

#12 - what does this piece do inside the caliper? I just rebuilt my calipers all new seals and this piece is damaged to some degree. Is it a must to get a brand new one or do I really need this piece? I have absolutely no idea what it does. Someone enlighten me please.

that is a little spring that kinda holds the pad in place.

how bad is it messed up? you should be ok without it.
