Default longer geared transmissions are for economy only right... or not?

i am arguing with someone right now and they think an LS trans. "holds boost longer" and is better for FI vehicles.

my argument is that shorter geared transmissions are superior in any event except a top speed type. then there is wheelspin which could be more noticeable with a B16 transmission or something similar such as an ITR, but then what are slicks for? but lets forget about traction and focus on mathematics.

anyways if someone can clear this misunderstanding up please.

i belive the arguement was, if you are looking for quicker times, you would want a shorter gear ratio, but if you are looking for a "longer boost" you would stay with LS tranny.

BUT if you are boosting on a b16 tranny over 10lbs you will get bad wheel hop / spin unless u had some tie bars or LSD... but even witht hat you will prob. have those problems...

Shorter gears = faster acceleration, lower top speed
Longer gears = longer acceleration, higher top speed

Some people in the SFWD class use the LS gears so they dont run out of gears down the track (which will slow you down). But these guys are making 600+whp. "holds boost longer" just means your beating on the engine longer then you should.

please explain what "longer boost" is exactly, it seems bad for the turbo

wait wait, you wont get wheel hop with an LS transmission on the same HP setup?

you will get wheel hop, but less likly to spin as much when you have the "longer gear ratio", and Longer boost, is pretty self explanitory, meaning you will hold boost longer because the gear ratio is longer.. if you dont understand that then thats sad.

or you need to learn how to drive...all b-series 1st gears are 3.43...LS and GSR's have the same 2nd gear ratio. A difference of the LS 4.2 final drive as opposed to 4.4 in the b16/gsr would not make a difference either....a type r tranny with boost...well, atleast you'd have a good 1/8 mile time haha

or you could be cool like me
1st gear-b16
2nd gear-LS
3rd gear-b16
4th gear-b16
5th gear-b16
Final Drive-4.4:1 b16 differential.

losing only a few hundred RPM inbetween 2nd and 3rd does wonders for holding boost.

Yea that was sorry, was doing other things when i typed it up and forgot which one was on.

No offense but that wheel hop theory is crap. You could have wheel hope on a stock LS with LS trans and stock SI with si trans. Its all in your driving.

lol akuna, its not "Beating ont he motor longer then u should" that can't be determined....

its a personal prefrence, and most people will agree if you are looking for a QUICKER TIME u will go with a shorter gear ratio, BUT if you are wanting the "long pulls" you will stay with the LS....

you are pulling this out more then it should. lol

I know, I never said you couldn't. I have wheel hop on the track in my stock LS, but I have a GSR tranny.. But like I said, its a personal prefrence if anything, because this theory could go on forever.....

it all started with me saying "If I wanted to stay in boost longer I would want a LS tranny, but if I am looking for quick times, I would want a shorter gear ratio, which means it will wrap thru them faster"

i dont want any "long pulls" sorry, it sounds like it would heat up my engine excessivley.

Your 100% right, in the end its totally personal perference on what trans to run.

On another note i could see the LS trans helping alot in tuning since the gearing is longer it will give you less of a wheel spin possiblity and you could keep a better track on the a/f ratio. Weither its true or not i have never tested it.

it would all be load tuning anyways, imo the difference is negligible.

i would like to see someone else chime in.

True, but i wouldnt run the slicks on the dyno. I know M&H say dont run there slicks on the dyno and i believe other companies do as well. I know lots of people do it an they come out ok with it, but i wouldnt want to chance it. LSD helps alot as well.

tunning? no.. If you get it dyno tuned / street its like what? 2hrs??? and I know plenty of people that have both LS tranny / B16 tranny

the argument for using an LS trans with boost is that boosted motors make a wider, more torquey powerband.

If you keep the engine at optimal power RPM, you will go faster. Imagine having a trans that ALWAYS kept your B16A @8k rpm when you put your foot down. No higher no lower. It would always make 170hp instead of having to work it's way up and then drop off.

Boosted motors are easier to launch with higher gears (2 wheel drive). For example: my 240sx ran 12s. But if you raced the car in 2nd gear, it ran out of breath so fast that it didn't go anywhere. Then you put it in 3rd and 4th and those kept pulling just as fast as 2nd. You have to keep the motor in the powerband for it to make optimal power.

Boosted motors usually like slightly longer gears. They aren't as peaky as all motor setups. A good turbo setup will make power everywhere.

Most all motor setups with small displacement make only top end. So you need shorter gears to get you there in a hurry. that's really the best way to explain it.

BTW, on the economy argument:

GSR MPG: 24/31
LS MPG: 24/31

Throttle position and MAP voltage (resulting from more throttle) and air and coolant temps determine gas mileage much more dramatically than revs.
