which tranny for b16 on boost?
i got an eg, and a b16 that im putting together for boost, i havnt bought the tranny yet. which would be best? im mostly concerned with light to light, top end would be nice IF it doesnt sacrifise my performance in short distances, i was thinking gsr would be my best bet but im not sure

Shorter will always produce quciker accelleration. All of this "LS is better because you stay in boost longer" is wrong, plain and simple.

Yeah i don't know why people say that. They should start off in second or third if they want to be in boost longer.

USDM type r tranny has the same gear ratios as a B16 but with LSD. There are also some other differences like a larger diameter diff (so FD won't be interchangable) and i think better synchros. If you get a JDM 98+ ITR tranny you will get B16 ratios for gears 1-3 and GSR 4-5 with a 4.785 final drive. This tranny would probably give you the best acceleration but they are a little more expensive.

The only reason an LS may be better is if you don't want to lose that time shifting into 5th in the 1/4 mile (assuming your car is fast enough).
However there are other ways of getting around this, like taller slicks for example. Also if you think a B16/ITR tranny is too short I would go to a GSR rather than an LS simply because it's still a lot tighter geared than an LS.
I would go with:
1) 98 JDM ITR tranny
2) ITR tranny
3) B16 tranny
4) GSR tranny
5) LS tranny
in that order.

Re: (Voyage34)
Just stick with either a b16a, ITR, or GSR tranny.
GSR would give you better mileage on the highway cruising in 5th gear... but will have nearly identical acceleration between the b16a and ITR in the lower gears.
ITR also has the LSD, which is a plus.

There is a local guy here that has a fully built LS VTEC, full race manifold, 22PSI on a 60-1, and an LS tranny and runs 10.5 all day long on slicks, he told me he only uses LS gears in his car.

What kind of numbers do you expect to be putting down with your turbo B16? If you're putting down a hell of a lot of power, people here who are suggesting the ITR just because of the LSD forget the fact that the ITR LSD doesn't hold up well under a lot of power;
Might as well use a B16 tranny and throw in a stronger aftermarket LSD; Or do that with a GSR tranny.

id like to be putting around 300 whp its not my daily driver but i wouldnt want a funny car either, could i do like 1,2,3, b16/itr gears and an ls 4,5? i figure like that light to light will be sweet and ill have a decent top end, do you guys think its worth it? i was planing on doing an LSD so i probably wouldnt go itr just to save some $$ especialy after hearing it wont hold power well, i was also considering a launch control kit, a guy around here has a hatch gsr on boost with a launch control kit, hes doing low 11's at the track and i believe its his daily driver. what have you guys heard about launch control kits??

NOT A SINGLE LARGE DIAMETER INPUT SHAFT B-SERIES TRANSMISSION IS STRONGER THAN ANOTHER!!!! Do some research before you open your mouth! You ASSume too much.
The LS transmission is great for higher HP cars or people that like to daily drive their cars without worrying about engine longevity of their boosted engine.
The GSR with a LSD installed is GREAT and I have seen nothing but good things from this setup. The 98+ JDM ITR transmission would be a good bit short and would keep you running crazy rpms at all times.....not that good for reliability. The B16/USDM ITR (pre 98 JDM ITR) would be a decent inbetween and makes up for the lack of power sometimes on lower HP cars, but you still get a decent amount of RPM going.
Out of my 150+ turbo setups that I have built, I have seen the most sucess with GSR transmissions with LS 5th gears installed and some sort of Helical LSD (OEM ITR/CTR diff or Quaife)
