Default Can you figure it out? DOHC ZC + high rpm vibration.

Hey guys.

Well i have been trying to sort this problem out myself, but after trying numerous things in an attempt to fix the problem, nothing has worked.

What's happening:

after around 5000rpm it sounds like the car is simply going to explode, vibration levels are high, but its an audible vibration, if you were deaf you would not notice the problem. Theres no effect on performance, just a real harsh noise.

At first i thought my timing might be off but after playing with it for a while it made no difference. The noise is not speed dependent, but revs dependent. Ive tried advancing and retarding my ignition timing with no effect.

I thought my distributer may have a problem with it, but before i forked out the money for a new distributor i saw a mechanic to see if he could lend some advice. I took him for a drive and although he said it doesn't sound pretty, it doesn't sound like anything actually wrong with the engine. Its not pinging, no death rattles etc. He dismissed it as being a small engine revving its **** off and making a lot of noise whilst its doing it.

Funny thing is though, when we pulled up, he popped the hood and yanked the throttle cable to see what his mate thought, and the noise wasn't there. The noise is not there in neutral! Its only there when theres a load on the engine. Which to me means that the engine is fine, and that there must be something between the engine and the transmission (because everything after the transmission is speed dependent as apposed to revs dependent).

Please tell me what the problem is. As a reference (as poor as it may seem), i have seen several different video clips of a DOHC ZC and none sound anything like this. I don't particularly want to get a sound clip, because i don't particularly like making my car make this noise.

Thoughts, ideas? Cheers guys.

so when you in neutral and rev over 5k, you hear the noise right?
(ie: it aint your 4wd drivetrain)

when in nuetral the noise isnt there. And if it were the 4wd system im pretty sure it would be relative to speed and not RPM.

the engine doesnt physically move looking at it. (more then usual anyway). On a side note though i did drive the car from NSW with no rubber on the front engine mount lol. I really felt when i f'd up a gear change. All fixed now though.

Not a mechanic but sounds like it might be a clutch problem. Only vibrates in gear right? Does your clutch slip alot? Maybe it having trouble clapping and starts slipping at higher revs? But like I said, not a mechanic.

Well i never break traction, so i guess the 4wd can put alot of stress on the clutch, shifting at WOT does cause some slipage, but i dont notice any just while accelerating. Yeah it only 'vibrates' in gear.

Please keep thoughts coming. Anything specifically with the clutch?

I dont understand why you dont know what the problem is. It is obviously...(from your description, anyway)....a problem with your clutch and or transmission.

The only way to pinpoint what that will be is to take it apart or replace your clutch and tranny. We cant pull the specific problem out of our hats for you.

You have an expensive problem to fix, good luck.

Yes I used to have a horrible vibration from my car too. It use to come along at 5k rpm also. The only difference was that my car had the stock exhaust which had finally rusted all the way through and the rust peices where the things causing the vibration. just my thoughts

Thanks for the advice, and for being a jackass about it. I was hoping to get some ideas as to what it might be, maybe even find someone who has experienced the problem to save myself some time and money in replacing parts that neednt be replaced.
