Octane Question for JDM motor
I read a thread that was archived in FAQ (which i had to search for) that related to the debate for premium vs. lower octane. many good points were made for both sides, but what caught my attention was when someone said that higher compression motors should run higher octane. So far, ive ran somewhere around 2 tanks or so of v-power 93 octane and of course theres no noticeable diff (i dont trust the butt dyno). my car has the JDM B16A which i believe was 10.4:1. what are the suggestions for octane? i dont know what the internals or compression look like, but after seafoaming, i'll have the numbers on said compression. thanks!

The lower compression USDM B16's use 91 or higher, the JDM motors use the same. The least I would use is 89.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I was leaning towards that. It runs great as is, but Im just making sure im not throwing away money on gas thats no necessary.
Thanks for the input!

never heard anything of the like with the couple hundred that I have built/installed.......maybe I missed something :
:
by the by, the compression difference is only like .2 unless we start talking B16B's which use the high pentroof PCT pistons instead of the latter PR3's or PR4's
Also, I have never seen anywhere on any 1st gen B16 (Del Sol VTEC) equipped vehicles to use any specific rating fuel.......just "unleaded fuel only"

If you built a couple hundred B16's i'm sure you would know the 1st gen B16 didn't come in the Delsol. And the 5 or so i've had all knocked with anything less than 89 in it and all say use premium fuel only.
So take whatever advice you will..

first generation in the US, obd0 versions were not included.....so technically second gen B16's

w3rd.
w3rd.
93 it is. thanks for all the advice. I ran 93 in my Jetta VR6 for over a year, so its not that big a deal. I was filling up the dub once a week at about $50 a fill.
that got old.
So I'll gladly put the good stuff in my faster/betterlooking/gasefficient honda.
Thanks for all the responses!

I can confirm this 100%.
My homeboy had a JDM B16. Low CA altitude and high temps caused it to knock and he had to throw some octane booster in there to get us home. On the other hand, he was running aftermarket engine management and may have been aggressive with the ignition timing.
