want a newer block... will this work?
my bother (tobe) brother inlaw has a 97 civic ex with 44,805 miles on it. He doesn't need it anymore(got B18c1).For the past 4 months the engines has just been sitting in the corner, and I'm thinking about buying from him. I just want the block and don't want to mess around with vtec and running a new harness... that get too complicated and $$$. I just want his block.
CAN I USE A 97EX BLOCK AND A 91 D16A1 HEAD ? i just want a car that i can take on road trips and practice at the track with, because my car has too many miles, and feels really weak.
WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO USE MY SI TRANNY/CLUTCH? MOUNTS ?
WHAT WILL THE COMPRESSION RATIO BE????
THANKS

you know... i heard that the D series are just like the B series... all interchangable... i have no personal expereince with it though.. you might want to find a head gasket for the 2 and try matching them up, make sure all the water jackets and head studs are where they are supposed to be.
one is vtec one isn't if its like the b series motors, the vtec one is gonna have oil passage, your gonna have to have that sealed, way i figure it will probobley be more usefull and reliable running the whole motor.
what are your trying to say, besides running the complete motor is more reliable?
So i need to plug up where the hole is for the vtec(oil) is on the 97ex block right. anything else?
I donlt want vtec in my D16. all i want is a stronger block thats cheap.

the only thing you really need is the ecu and to run a couple wires. Who know do that? Otherwise you're spending time doing it, plus a new head gasket... The block to get would be a civic dx block... No vtec...
Anybody know what it would be like to just use the sohc vtec motor and use the crx intake manifold and not hook up the vtec?
Im just wondering if it'd be more power than the stock si motor (110hp).

Just get the whole motor, run your intake manifold and distributor and ECU. Use your mounts and tranny. Use the old flywheel and clutch. Hook the vtec to a RPM switch ($40) and relay (to make it +) and you have vtec as well.
It's not all that hard to do, but take a while and don't forget to check all grounds or it won't start.
