Default Any tips on making the job easy when changing a passenger side cv joint assembly?

Hello All,

I've gotten a 92 prelude sr. It seems as though on the passenger side cv joint assembly, the top of the boot (shaft side) that is on the transmission side not the wheel side is letting grease out. I can't seem to find a crack in the boot (it may be just the age of the car). I should add that the joint isn't clicking at this point. My first question is this common? Second, is there any tips anyone has to make the job easy when it comes time to change the cv joint assembly? Third, when and if the cv joint starts to click is it a definate clicking sound and how loud is it?

Yeah it's common on older cars for boots to leak/tear and cv joints to wear out. Take it from me it's alot easier to buy a new axles or set of axles instead of replacing the cv. I just got done replacing a boot on my cv join and it took me probly 10 times longer to fix then to just replace the axle. U spend half ur time just taking it apart and cleaning it out and putting the new boot and clamps on, which u need a special tool for. But yeah, as long as u don't hear a clicking sound u should be fine to drive on for awhile, but definately get that replaced soon.

It's pretty straight forward. Only tip I have is drain the transmission before you pull the axle out.

And a ball joint splitter is nice to have. Cheap to rent if you don't know someone who has one.

either drain the tranny first like stated above, or jacked up the entire car levelly, as in 4 jack stands or on a lift, so that no fluid runs out the hole.

Are you sure? It seems to me like even with the car level, the fill bolt is higher than the diff....not sure though.

Be careful with ball joint splitters to not rip the boot.

OP: Get a bottle of simple green and a roll of paper towels to clean the axle grease up, that stuff is NASTY!

If I buy the whole axle assembly how long should it take to replace? Also, is the clicking sound a metal on metal sound or does it sound the same as when the wheel bearing is worn?
