Default Need help from you $50 paint job guys!

so ive been reading through the $50 paint job thread, and before i give it a go i wanna make sure i got everything and know what im doing. So for supplies i bought 1qt of gloss black and 1qt of gloss smoke gray! i plan to paint my hood, fenders, f.bumper, top, and hatch black, then the rest of the body gray. so 1st question, will that be enough? i also bought some oderless mineral spirits, rollers, measuring bucket, and a couple of brushes. already had sandpaper, tape, razors...and all that lil stuff. so first i prep the car by sanding it down. then i prep the car for paint. then i mix the paint and mineral spirits, this is where i get confused first two coats, how much do i mix, then second two coats, how much do i mix, then third two coats, how much do i mix, and final two coats, how much do i mix. i noticed in the thread a lot of people talked about thinning the final coats. so any input and tips on you that have done this, i would really appriciate it. thanks for lookin guys

From personal experience i've mixed the apint close to 50/50.

Get regular Mineral Spirits, Odorless sucks.

It should be enough paint.

Your gonna need alot of sand paper. i would get:

400 (good to have incase you lay on your first coat too thick), 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000

I kinda regret it.. it's so much work, and it can get frustrating at times. Sanding will drive you insane, and seeing orange peel right after you sand will **** you off even more.

But then when i look at it, i invested about $120 into this paint job, and the cheapest Maaco job is atleast $750 around here, so i'm happy so far.

I'm not finished yet, still laying on ther final coats and waiting to do the final wetsand.

Mineral Spirits is diffrent. I'm nott sure of the benefits of using Mineral Spirits over Paint thinner, but i started out with regular paint thinner and swtiched to MS when i found it.

Let your paint dry thoroughly. Wait atleast 4 hours in between coats. The paint should be dry to the touch. If you don't let your paint dry properly and keep painting layers it'll start peeling.

PS: DON'T and i repeat DON'T skimp on wet sanding. Sometimes you'll feel lazy and be tempted to skip it but you'll pay the price on your next coat.

What color are you pianting BTW?

You want help well heres my help:
DONT ROLL IT ON.
It will take many, MANY coats to get full coverage and it will take you FOREVER to sand inbetween all those coats.
You roller guys are crazy.
Go to Home Depot and get the Wagner HVLP paint gun for $50.
Use it to spray your car, it will cover it in one coat and then give it a quick buff with some GOOD (expensive) cutting and polishing compound, then be done with it, there wont be much orange peel so no sanding, and this way it can be done in an afternoon and not take a week of 100 hours of sanding and then rolling on a couple coats like a jackass.

When spraying dont use MS to thin use Acetone.
And I would experiment with adding a hardener to it because the Rustoleum looks great when wet but as it dries it dulls and loses its wet look and deep shine.
If you could add hardener to make it dry super fast while its still looks wet, then that might look really good.

But this rusto paint job isnt the best.

I would have to recommend spraying REAL automotive paint, or taking it to Maaco.
Prep the car yourself and Maaco should be able to paint it for under 300.

Have you even done this method??? Im getting sick of you bashing and giving tips to people on a method you have clearly either royally fucked up or just haven't even experimented. To the OP, good luck on your project man. It takes a lot of work but its worth it in the end. Just follow what everybody has said in the main thread and don't listen to this [guy].

the reason I strongly try to dissuade people from the roll on method is that I have tried it on a test panel. Rolling it on leaves so much dust in the paint not to mention the horrible HORRIBLE texture, that I dont know why anyone would roll their car and then have to sand the **** out of it cause the paint is lumpy and filthy with specs in it.

The rustoleum job is GREAT for $50 bucks. But if you roll it on your just creating a shitload of sanding work for yourself when you could just spray one coat maybe two tops, buff it out and be done no sanding.

Im getting paint from this site
http://www.paintforcars.com/
for $65 because I'm not satisfied with rustoleum thats what i'm sporting now and its dull.
