Default Radiator Fan Problem..mabey

I belive my radiator fan is going out of wack, not sure, I turn my car on and let it heat up and no fan turns on, when i turn my a/c on, both fans turn on, when i turn the a/c off both fans stop, when i turn my car off no fan turns on. Also my temp gauge i belive doesnt work it will go above red no matter how cold my car is, i let it sit for a week turn it on and it goes straight to red, it doesnt bounce straight up there in a second, it slowly raises and i dont mean i na creeping manor, i mean with in 10 seconds its up to the red already.. so i guess the two questions

1. Whats up with the Rad Fan. I dont think its the motor sense it turns on when the A/c is on, would it be the sensor on the top radiator hose where it meets the block?

2. Why is my temp guage raising to red (even above it all the way to the top) even if my car isnt over heating?

all fluids are good and i have no leaks that i know of any ideas?

i could search but a majority of them were "why does my rad fan stay on even if car is off" type stuff. And sense it seems lie my motor is working i dont need to jump it to the battery or nothing, should i try the sensor? any help would be appricated

A lot of stuff going on here. There are three different temp sensors you should be worried about. One is located on the side of the block and sort of looks like a pin just stuck there in the side. That one sends a signal to your inside gauge.

The next sensor is located by the thermostat and it tells the fans to turn on when the car is running and the coolant reaches a certain temperature.

The last sensor is located where the upper radiator hose meets the block and sends a signal to turn the fans on when the coolant is a certain temp and the engine is off.

So what I would do is unplug the thermo sensor with the car running and short it out. If the fans cut on the sensor may be bad. If they still don't then the fan control module or relays could be bad. Do the same with the other temp sensor on the upper radiator hose. If the fans turn on the temp sensor may be bad. If they still don't it is either the relays or fan control module.

If neither sensor being shorted out will activate the fans it is probably the fan control module.

and to short them out i read that u just use a paper clip and put it in each connector in the sensor? correct

thanks for the help i appricate it

also when my temp gauge did work, it never went higher then half way alway sstayed below it like a normal accord.. if my rad. fan didnt work would it go higher then that? or nah

It is possible for it stay cool just fine if it's not really hot outside and you aren't beating on it. And the paperclip method is correct.

ok so i jumped the thermo sensor and both fans turned on, i plugged ti back in, i jumped the sensor on where the top rad. hose meats the block and no fans turn on.

so im guessing the top rad. hose one is a bad sensor and then for the thermo i got a bad relay or module.

If you jumped the thermo sensor while the car was running and both fans cut on then everything like the fan control module and relays and stuff are good. That temp sensor MAY be bad if the fans never come on while the car is running.

The upper rad. hose sensor must be tested after cutting the car completely off. Try that and then let me know what happens.

Im having the same exact problem. I'll keep everyone filled in on the situation. I just tried the first jump with the car on. I tried the location at the thermostat. I'll do the process of ellimination after testing the fans themselves. Not stealing the thread, but thanks everyone for the insight you have given the other person on here.

I'm actually having the same problem too, my radiator fan won't turn on, and I'm not exactly sure if it's just the fan. My car overheats, and I have put in coolant for the radiator because unfortunatly my intellegent self uncorked the radiator stopper and let all the coolant spray everywhere. So! I do not think there is a leak in the hoses, and the relay and fuses all check out... what else should I do to fix that problem?

As a preliminary test, just like I'm about to do, you can test the fans themselves. Just unhook the fan wire clip and use a jumper wire from your battery to test the fan and make sure that it even works at all first. Im going to be doing that here in an hour or so. Ill keep everyone posted and leave some feedback on what the outcome is.

Also, Honda_Accord- I would not say a relay is bad if the fans kick on. The relay controls the power that goes to the fans.

ok I had a similar prob with my 96 about 2 years ago... when car on, in idle, it overheats and fans don't come on.. but they did come on when a/c was on and when I turned the car off. \
check the fan switch
my mechanic replaced the fan switch, and everything's ok now..

In response to 85turbo, my fans do work, and there is coolant in the radiator, but after doing some troubleshooting, narrowed it down to either my thermostat or my water pump. I know I can fix my thermostat right now, but I'm not quite sure how to check the status of my water pump. Any ideas? ... haha, mabye go buy a book.

Generally when a water pump fails you will see a small drip from a location called a weep hole. Its a small hole located on the bottom of the water pump.(usually) Alot of time the water pump may be making irregular noises as well. If your temp is shooting up like that though, it sounds like your thermostat is sticking.
