I dont know whats wrong with my thermostat. i recently bought a 94 Ls with 170k on it, it's all stock and i have realized that the themostat isn't working, any tips, fix ideas??? pleae help i need all the help i can get!!!! -Roger (worloc918@aol.com)
take off the thermostat. your car will run cooler.
not a good idea.
just get a replacement part, it is easier to replace than changing the oil.
edit: unless you are talking about the temp guage, and calling it a thermostat, in which case it could be a multitude of problems, the guage itself, the sender unit, a wire that has worked itself loose, only doing some electrical diagnostic work can you find the answer, if you don't feel up to it, best to take it to a mechanic. if it is your temp guage you are talking about, it helps to know what is going on with your cooling system, if something in your cooling system doesn't work properly and you can't tell because you have a bum guage, well you are out a few thousand dollars as opposed to being out the few hundred to find and repair the problem.

well, my guess is the sender unit, just my guess though. The sender is located....correct me if im wrong right near the thermostat in the lower coolant hose. Could also be the plug coming loose or a wire frayed.. Get under there and do a visual inspection before getting to worried.
ANyone else with suggestions??

i didnt know it was so cheap...yeah, with out question.... check and or replace since its so cheap the thermostat, and that way you can put some fresh coolant in there, besides, your coming up on a timing belt change at 180K, wont hurt to have it all done.
The 2 wire plug on the thermostat housing is the radiator fan switch. The sender you want to look at is on the head, under the distributor. There are 2, one for the ecu and one for the gauge.
its really hard to say w/o being at the car.. we're all guessing... it could be a bad guage, bad temp sensor/sending unit, guage not getting power/input, bad thermostat, try the easiest things first (checking all the connections, wires, harnesses) before spending money on things that might not even be broken.. could just be a loose wire...
the thermostat is very inexpensive. you also need the rubber gasket that goes around the ring on the thermostat.
just follow the bottom radiator hose to the engine. there.. you will see it plugged into the engine.. there are 3 bolts there.. i forgot what size... one on the left side, right side and the bottom. its a bitch to take off.. i have to use a swivel along with extensions to take those off.
after u take those 3 bolts off.. the hose should just side out.. get a flat head screw driver and yank out the old thermostat out.
