Default D15 Timing Belt: WILL IT RUN if belt is 1 tooth off? 2 teeth?

Just did timing belt, water pump, tensioner. Added coolant, replace plugs. Its running, but sounds louder and garbled kinda. RPMs also go faster when above 5000, unlike the way it used to run.

Is this NORMAL and mine was just retarded over time?

Or is it possibly 1-2 teeth advanced/retarded? Will it run like that? How safe is it?

Details.

Ummm...

Can it run? Yes.

Should it? No.

Should you be more confident and/or informed when replacing something that can smash your valves into your piston? Yes.

It should be corrected.

I ran mine from Phoenix to Charlotte one tooth off got terrible MPG and had no power. So we started checking timing and sure enough 1 tooth off. Not a good thing. Guess when you purchase a car it should be checked be for you set off on a non stop run across country.

Why would you go through all that work and not set/check the base ignition timing? You'll know right away if the cam timing is off after you check the ignition timing.

i have the same problem and am in the process of fixing it, but i have a ? about this. . .If it is just my cam retarded by one tooth, is it possible for me to just loosen the belt tensioner bolt till i get enough play in the belt, corrrect the cam that one tooth, and then tighten the tensioner back up? the dizzy is in time. . . this is on d15b2. . . do i need to take off al this other junk, or can i cheat the system?

well chalk that one up as a lesson learned. . . .for future reference, do not try to cheat and just give yourself that one extra tooth. . . unless i did something teribly wrong? ? ? but i am pretty sure i tapped or worse, bent a couple of valves, was not too tough turning by hand but once i got it back to my marks on cam and belt where i adjusted to, i was almost 4 teeth off? ? WTF? well, good thing ive got a head to replace this one, think im gonna do dizzy and wires while i am at it, #2 was pretty corroded. . .maybe she'll run better this time. . . .

ps. . anyone direct me as to what head i have, i honestly have no clue, its got a stamp on it and ivedone some searching with no luck. its stamped P2F-6?

did not start, just one full revolution of the cam by hand with the crank, and it was 4 teeth off, and yes d15b2. . . gonna pull it apart, and see what i got, start from scratch

Oh ok, what makes you think that you damaged anything? I dont think you would be able to turn it if the pistons were hitting valves. Just put the belt on correctly, double check your timing then see if it fires up.

ok, so for the life of me, and the previous 3 persons to attempt it, this pulley bolt will not come off! ! !

I have found the specialty tools for honda pulleys, but none of them say they fir the 1.5. . anyone tell me if the 1.6 and 1.5 share the same size pulley bolts? I'd hate to buy a tool and then just sit here waiting for the wrong tool. or if there is anyone in the Eastern NC area with a few free hours this weekend, i'll provide the beer! ! !

anyone help me on this one, tool, or helping hands?

I had to take my car to a truck mechanic to use their 1500lb/ft rattle gun to break that goddamn nut. My car was drinking coolant faster then i could replace it at that stage too. Waterpump was about to explode....

What engine code does the 1.6L model cater for? Because if its a D16 im almost certain that it would be identical.

alright, well now i think i need some serious help. If I am not mistaken, the timing is done from off of the timing belt cover marks, lined up with the tdc mark on the pulley. now my problem(pictures to follow) is that the damn pulley bolt is so tight, I have cracked the pulley! I dont know or care if this is a common occurence, I just want to get my only car running again! I have used the bolts through the pulley trick, with 1/2" drive impact, also tried it with the 6 foot breaker bar, this is when the pulley cracked, so now i need a new pulley, obviously. . . .what the hell else can i do to get this bolt off, and if it is this tight, do i even want to take this off? I am in dire straits here people, I need my car, and well now i need a pulley, so if anyone has one, a PM would be nice. . . . thanks

justin

I mentioned the timing belt cover, because if i just piant marker some marks, and the pulley is not cacked through, can i cut off the timing belt cover and get the job done half assed this way?
