soldering iron for ECU's
im trying to install my hondata on my p28. i want to know if a cheap normal soldering iron will get the job done or i need a special one with a little station and all the other extras.
Not to flame you bro but with a question like that you kinda answered it yourself, you should let somebody with experience do the soldering for you since they know the special tools required to make this job easy.
you have 2 learn one way or the other. I've seen it done a couple times but the soldering irons they use are like 150 to 200 dollars. i rather do it myself learn in the process and save some money.

as a fellow do-it-yourselfer I say go for it
. all you can do is ruin your Ecu right?
just be prepared to possibly mess something up, I have seen it done quite a bit at the shop I used to work at years ago. We chipped ECUS for German cars in house and it's not reall hard to do it's just tedious. I know you need a special tip that allows you to apply heat to the whole length of the chip so keep the solder joint even and as far as if you can get that kind of stuff cheaper? i could not tell you for sure, I do know that radio shack does NOT sell specialty bits like that so I assume where ever you have to get a kit it probably is expensive.
Good luck, everybody had to learn sometime

i googled the tools that phearable.net uses and they aren't cheap to say the least. I figured, how many times in my life will i need to do it, so i let them handle it

you can do it.. i have chipped 4 ecu's with nothing more than a radio shack 25 watt soldering iron and some desoldering braid.
here is a descent write up on how to do it. http://mycomputerninja.com/?p=5

i used a 25w for soldering too
and used a pin while applying heat to make a hole to remove the old solder in the spots to put the new chip in
dont listen to the weaklings who say 'get a pro to do it'... if you feel confident enough and are willing to take on the risks.
