Default best way to sand down paint?

i did the $50 paint job, the paint is fading into a yellow color for some reason, now i'm going to take it down to the previous color and paint it all over again, the right way.

what is the best way to sand this? i was thinking of going at it with 300grit wet. i don't have a DA sander but if recommended i'll go ahead and buy one. i am sanding the ENTIRE body btw.

i've researched and i've seen some go at it dry while others go at it wet. i'd really want to go wet but i'm going to get to the metal on some parts but it'll be primered with 2k primer.

what do you guys say i should do?

Whats "best" is going to vary a lot from person to person. There is so many ways to achieve the same end result. Do whatever correct method your most comfortable with. Wet sanding w/ around 320 would be fine for a high build primer. When wet sanding make sure to constantly rinse all the sanding scum off before it dries. It cleans up much faster that way. Also when wet sanding its good to rinse/ blow out all the corners/ edges/ crevices thoroughly so scum doesn't dry and get stuck and blow out when spraying.

I like to hit it with a DA first, then block it.

if you got the time, id say just get some automotive paint stripper and start from scratch.

Stripping the whole car would also take a lot of stripper and would make a lot of mess. Media blasting would be a wise choice if your going for the gold.

I would use the da sander and use about a 240 grit and go to town.

are you going down to bare metal, or the factory primer, or what? Could also get one of those 7" grinders with some 50 grit and hit that to the bare metal, epoxy it, primer it, wetsand, primer. I like to do that on my **** if there is more than one layer of paint already on it.

Media blasting FTW! That's the way I would go, unless you've got nothing but time, then use a DA or a big *** Mud Hog.

I heard about that happening with folks who used Rustoleum white. But you used something different but still enamel. It has something to do with the chemical makeup of the enamel.....something.

Anyway are you gonna try Interlux Brightside?

I guess you want to go down to primer eh? Because you are not sure if the old paint is gonna mess up the new one down the road...

I'd start with 80 grit and finish off with 320grit before you start painting. use 80 grit carefully on the plastic panels though.

good luck!

i'm thinking of going down to the metal on most parts, yeah. or at least to the original color, blue. i'm going to try and get rid of most of the marine paint because like someone said, i am scared of the paint having a bad chemical reaction.

i've heard good things of PPG, so that's what i'm going to do. i'll go and purchase a D/A this weekend and try to take the whole car down with 100-200grit before spraying some 2k high build primer.

i'm not trying to rush through this, so i have lots of time. i'm trying to get it painted by the time it starts getting cold, late september/early october.
