Default AEM EMS

How plug & play is the EMS exactly? I have a 2000 Si that I will be boosting in about 6 months and I've decided on the AEM, as I want to stay OBD2. My question is do you just plug it up, program it, and start the car? I know it's not that simple, but is it close? From what I've read/searched you essentially put in your mods, set a boost level and it does most of the work.

I will be getting the car tuned, but can I drive it to the tuner like that? On their basemap?

have your tuner make you a basemap.

it is "plug and play" , but it does not do anything by itself. its only as good as the person using it.
you will have to change/turn on things (rad fan/vtec/rev limit/injector size/map sensor/and whatever other sensors you have)
you can drive a car on their basemap(ive done it before with stock injectors/map) and the car seemed to run ok, but i did not have a wideband on it or egt to see what was really happening.
i do not recomend beating on the car with a basemap, because that is all it is.... a base map. (most likely you'd hurt the engine doing that)

I see. Now will I be able to drive the car with the turbo/larger injectors/etc to the tuner, you're saying? I will definately be getting the UEGO option.

If I happen to go into boost on the way to the tuner will I be okay?

in my opinion, leave you stock injectors in it,+ stock computer. and DO NOT BOOST.(its very easy to drive like this, and you wont be holding up traffic ) then swap to the aem/large injectors when you get to the tuner.

So I bolt the kit on, oil lines and everything, leave the ECU and injectors stock and drive to the tuner with the AEM in hand? Will I be okay if I have to go on the highway?

or if you have AAA get the upgrade so you have free 100 miles of towing That's what I did. I built the engine, installed everything and then had my car towed to the tuner. I used the AEM EMS for my setup and will use it again when I finally buy a new turbo setup.

plug n play means you dont have to do any wiring. its a standalone that you can plug in and play with it.

if you dont know what you are doing drive it carefully on stock injectors to get it tuned

That's the thing. I've been learning on here and PGMFI.org but I don't trust my self in the slightest. And since you're a trained specialist, I'll listen to you. Stock injectors + AEM and drive like a grandmother. Now all I have to do is find a AEM tuner in NC

I also have an em1 with the aem ems and it is nowhere close to plug and play. The installation is very easy but the base maps are terrible. The most important time is the initial startup after the build you can easily damage a motor in a few moments like what happened to me.Get it to the tuner before you even start driving on it.

You won't have to convert to OBDI through a jumper harness, but you also won't retain OBDII functionality. I don't know if thats a concern to you.

Also, if you're leaving the stock injectors in, why not just drive it to the tuner on the stock ECU? Are you building the engine at all?

No need to be an ***, I already have my answer. Thank you anyways.

.dave has a good point. As the former owner of a black EM1 with an AEM EMS in NC (tuned by JDogg), I can tell you that while the plug is OBD2, the EMS is not OBD2 and you will not pass a state inspection. Of course I have heard of unscrupulous people finding ways around that, but they are not legal, so I'm not going to recommend them in a public forum.

For tuning, pay JDogg to come to your place and tune it from the first start-up. You'll have a wide-band, so he can street tune it right there to make sure that it's safe to drive to the dyno. That's what I do, and it's worked well so far.

JDogg gets my vote for NC. Either leave the stock injectors and map sensor. Pay JDogg to come to you. Pay JDogg for a close/tuned startup calibration. Last option is to tow it
