Default Installing Camshafts

I have a question can you take off the cam pulleys off while the camshafts are out? if I have camshafts with the pulleys connected how can I go about takeing the cam pulleys off?

is it really that bad to hold the cam gear and zip off the nut with an impact wrench?

in your hand?..... what are you gonna do when the gear slips and rips your hand the hell apart?

Hold the cam (not the gear) firmly with a rag.
Not that I have ever done anything like that

Thanks for the replies guys...I got them installed today now I have a quesiton...

What are the torque specs for the camshaft covers?

Also I know the intake camshaft has the distributor on one end and the exhaust I believe just has the little plastic cap. Like a dust cover correct? a pic of the cap installed would be nice
