lsd for d16y8
my friend bought a d16y8 for his 99 civic dx coupe to get rid of his low mileage non-vtec y7 engine and we want to know what kind of options he has for a limited slip differential for the y8. i hear of phantom grip & obx makes them for the d-series but all ive heard is stories.. so any knowledge would definetly help.
deosnt really matter what he buys....its a D series ..lol lsd's on those cars will make a diffenrence if you upgrade your clutch . ive seen it done before
there are options out there..but you're gonna pay like atleast 800-1000 for the quaife. you're honestly probably cheaper off tracking down a jdm d series trans (came with lsd) for like 500 and having someone put it in or put it in yourself.
call hmotors and ask if they have any in stock..they will part one out for you.

Your clutch has nothing to do with an LSD. The lack of power makes an LSD pointless, but FWIW many have had problems with the OBX units. However, there is a rebuild thread around here somewhere. It'll work find as long as you go over it before it's installed.
p.s. Stay away from the phantom slip.

I would say save the money to make more power. Phantom grip will eat everything in the transmission and the obx has to be adjusted in several ways normally by a transmission shop quiafe is way to much.

thats not true..if he eventually is going to turbo the motor with a good setup he will have a great gains for a single cam 1.6l and the lsd will come in handy for traction.
all it takes is time and money and if he has both...if anyone has both in this situation they will see gains on that motor..that motor has great potential as long as you do everything right and tune it right.
EDIT: but to stay on topic, go with the JDM D series trans

sounds good thanks guys. power will not be an issue, dude spent $2k on a complete Spoon d-series head for this engine last week and hasnt yet bought parts for bottom end work, its all-motor setup, car is being built for local amateur autocross and occasional touge runs. i have heard about the jdm d15b having a lsd trans, never thought about bolting it to a 96+, but i have another guy that might have to look that one for his 94 4dr that we just installed a turbocharged mini-me he bought online but he has a z6 trans on his. runs hard. guys on our crew stick with d-series they're cheap, can be fast and are easily repaired. the jdm d15b lsd hard to come by online?
eh not really sure how hard they are to come by online...best bet is to call a company like hmotors or whatever...call them and ask if they have any in stock. normally they will part one from a motor..i know hmotors will...and yes the d15 will go on the 96+ motor...its all the same ****.
Voice of actual experience:
LSD's on the D series are really good. When I swapped out my D15B7 for my D15B VTEC with an LSD transmission, I noticed that it held the road so much better than the open diff of the D15B7. Yeah, believe it or not, you CAN have traction issues with a weak *** SOHC, especially with an open diff. My launches improved as well, since I was distributing more even power to both wheels. Of course, I have to mention that I did upgrade the clutch, but even then, the improvement is NOT minimal.
Plus, I get to make fun of my buddy in his mustang when all he can do is the one-wheel-peel.

Anywho, on to your question. OBX is an adequate LSD, but you need to consult the FAQ on how to field-strip one, and fix it up with some TLC before you put it in your car. Otherwise, it's just another low quality OBX component. Go OBX, get it into optimum condition for as little as FREE with some time spent, and get it in your car. You won't be dissappointed.
