5 speed swap. help pls.
hey guys. i picked up a parts car 89 hatch (dx?) and it has a good 5 speed tranny in it. (as far as i know). i have a few questions though.... (im n3wbbbb)
1. i have a 90 hatch, std. model, 4 speed manual, will my axles work with the 5 speed tranny?
2. will the shift linkage from my std. civic work with the 5 speed?
3. am i going to need to do any wiring?
4. will my speedo be the same or will i need to change the input gear thingy??
5. im trying to take the tranny off without removing the engine... i emptied the tranny fluid, removed the axles, took off shift linkage, and i removed pretty much all the bolts holding the tranny on/in (i have a jack under it).. except for the bottom one on the starter (its a pain and i didnt have time to get to it today) however with all these bolts removed it does not seem to come off of the block at all. i have 5 bolts off of where the tranny bolts to the block. i will have 6 after i remove the starter one. then i took the tranny off of all the mounts. Is there anything i am missing? haynes says this should work?? im wondering if i should remove the bottom metal "plate" on the tranny that covers the bottom of the clutch? i dont really know. this is my first time touching a tranny. any help is wonderful, or even a reference to a good DIY.. thanks.
p.s i did search.

sounds like your on the right track.....putting in the 5 speed will be just like putting the 4 speed back in...no wiring or swapping axles. good luck
awsome. thats nice to know. will make it allot easier. wut about the shift linkage?
and as for getting the tranny out... i need a bit of help? i wont work on it again till friday night so i got time to read tomorow night.
p.s this project was an amazing excuse to go out and buy a nice set of tools. for 250$ i got a 360 piece mastercraft socket set from canadian tire. it says on-sale normally 700$... i dunno anyone who would pay that, but its got a lifetime warrenty, so for 250$ im pumped. no more using parents tools!!!

yes youneed to take that off. it is bolted up to two bolts on the oil pan and you also need to take the exhaust off. you will need a 32 mm socket and a breaker bar with a pipe to take the axel nust off gl with that

i took the exhaust off cause i was using it on my car. and i am hopefully gonna be doin this tomorow. i planned on doing it friday but the exhaust took a while, i had to cut and weld it in a few places because it didnt fit my hatch.
