D series are cheap and if you mess that up its not too big of a deal. dont go and spend the money on a gsr or anything if youre not too confident.

personally i would get a D series to start. liek some one said above mini me would teach you alot. I yet have to build a engine althought i have taken one apart totally and put it back together. IT was a Hydrolocked engine Btw.

F or H if you can.

LS-T if you wanna make a ****-ton of turbo power.

Turbo-D or LS w/ B16 trans if you're on a budget.

It depends, if you have a Y7 or a B7 they can be a very economical way to bolt on 25hp.

On the flipside, I've seen people spend WAY too much money on them (which makes them not worth it). It depends on how much you do it for.
