D16Z6 won't rev past 6k...ideas?
I have heard some people's engines not revving past 5k, but mine hits the rev limiter at like 6100, and redline begins at 7k. According to some specs I found, fuel cut-off isn't until 7200 rpm. I am no where near it. The car pulls hard up to 6k, and then BAM! fuel cuts off. Any ideas?
Yeah, it should go higher... does anyone know why it isn't? Is anyone else having a similar issue? I have a '94 EX coupe, if that helps.

I realize you bought it from the original owner, but I would check it anyway.
There's one clip that holds the carpet in, pop it out.
It should read XXXXXXXXXXXX-P28-XXXXXXXXXXXX (X's numbers of course). It's quite possible that somebody told him another ECU could make him go faster so he's using it. I've seen that crap one too many times.
Also, make sure the CEL turns on when you start the car, if it doesn't, he might have pulled the bulb out.

The redline on the B7 is 6400 RPM, not 7200. 7200 RPM is the redline in the Z6, '92-'95 EX/Si motors.
@ OP:
Is it just a fuel cut off, or is it a rev limiter?
Check out the ECU serial and replace the CEL bulb.

Honestly, fuel cutoff/rev limiter are basically the same, as all a rev limiter is is a cut in fuel and spark, and it feels like you hit a wall. Anyways, the original owner was a 16 yr old girl, and she sold it to me when she was 21, so no one has touched this car as far as that goes. Trust me, it's stock, but I'll check anyways.

Go to step two...
Does the MIL light up upon startup? Is the CEL bulb functioning?
If so, run a test on your ECU anyways. It's quite possible you have a pending code (which will NOT throw a CEL but can toss you into limp mode...though I doubt that's the problem, it's worth a try).

you know if the temp sensor isnt sending the right voltage to the ecu it wont let you rev past 6k. normally if the engines not fully warmed up itll send a signal to the ecu saying " hey im not ready to race" (wont let the engine rev over a certain rpm), so im guessing yours is faulty or something along those lines. just something to think about
do a regular check on all your sensor na make shure everythings getting the right voltage, check your CELs, you might be in limp mode na not even know it. my firneds z6 was doin the same thing untill i put my p28 in. ran right after that
the temp sensor never does that with me, i gotta extra one that i zip tie to the coolany hose an plug it in to run a little harder.

Iono about that one chief, I have a stock Z6 with a stock P28 and I can start mine right up and wind it out to the redline.
@ OP:
Use a scanner (plugs into the 3 prong port on passenger side kick panel) and check the RPM, your tach could be REALLY off.

Thanx for all the info guys, I'll do some more checking around, and see what I can dig up. Any recommendations for scanners to check PID's?

Any shop should be able to do it.

does it do it when u drive? when u punch it... my z6 did that for a while turns out it was the throttle body was clogged with somthing...
other then that check for clogs basically injectors, pvc valve, vac lines timing adjustment, distributer cap and rotars...
just throwing ideas there alot of d16z6 defect after the years if there not taken care of!
