D16Z6 wont rev passed 6000 rpm
I was recently handed down a 94 Civic ex coupe with a d16z6. The car runs great but when I accelerate the engine hits fuel cut at 6000 rpm. The redline is higher than this and according to what Ive read peak horsepower should be to. The check engine light comes on occasionally and the speedometer often stops working at random times. A friend said that might have something to do with it. Im not trying to make the car super fast or anything I just want it to run and perform like it should. Another odd thing is the vtec crossover. I read that this should happen with my engine at 4800 rpm but it seems to be happening at about 4100 rpm. But like I said other than this the car runs great. Especially for one with 265000 miles. Thanks for any help.

After looking into it a bit further I think it is the gauge cluster since I'm already having speedometer issues. Thanks for the help fellas.

Re: D16Z6 wont rev passed 6000 rpm
You might think......
However for VTEC to work certain criteria must be present..
Vehicle speed >5mph
Coolant temp >170 F
engine speed >4800-5200 (depending on model/engine/ecu)
Throttle position >~60%
oil pressure >~20psi (After Vtec activated)
Here's the deal.. If you don't match all of the criteria above VTEC will NOT work..
There are 2 fuel maps and 2 ignition maps.. The low (Non-vtec) cam is not designed to run out to 7500 RPM, so it will fall on its face shortly after 5800.. If your speedo is bouncing all over the place or erratically working, You need to check your VSS (Vehicle speed sensor).. It's in the back of your trans on top against the firewall. It has a 3 terminal plug.. It's not uncommon for the plugs to capture water and rust/corrode the terminals off of both the VSS and the plug on the harness..
Unplug your VSS and with a flashlight, see if you can see corrosion and or moisture in the top of the sensor.. You MAY need to replace the VSS and splice a new plug for the VSS into your harness if you find corrosion. If you find you do have to splice a new plug, I strongly recommend soldering and using weatherproof heat shrink tubing (it has a sealant inside the tube) to keep all water and contaminants out of the wire so you don't have to do this again.
