Quick vtec question
I can find a straight answer on this does vtec start at 4400rpms or 5500 rpms on my GSR STOCK, car it feels like it starts at 5500 rpms. My boy got his car dynode the other day and the tech was telling me that vtec should be engaging at 4400 rpm and the secondary butterflies at 5500rpm. I believe my oil is low would this cause vtec to delay at a higher rpm.

yes vtec kicks in between, then secondaries open at 5500 to 6000.
depending how hard you are on the throttle, wide open throttle they open at earliest point.
try it out, just drive in 2nd gear, first try accelerating slowly and you will hear the vtec pop closer to 5000, then secondaries will open closer to 6000
then mash it and you will hear vtec pop at 4500, secondaries will open at closer to 5500.

VTEC activates at 4400 RPM on a stock GSR. You can't hear it because your not suppose to, Honda purposley incorporated into their design of the exhaust manifold supression of noise. The average car owner doesn't want to hear it, they'll think there's something wrong with the car. The intake manifold's IAB's open up at 5700 RPM's to allow more airflow into the head. That's what your hearing.

There should be a slight sopund difference. It's very distinctive. And if you really really can't hear it or whatever, check your vtec solenoid, oil level, any CEL's will dissactivate vtec. Vtecs a bitch like that sometime, your **** has to be running perfect to get it to hit
But you get that hElLa UbEr MaD 3Rd GeAr PoOl Yo1!

Unless you have adjusted the VTEC crossover, which I assume you haven't since that would be a late engagement point for bolt-ons, you are only hearing the butterflies open, as many have posted already. VTEC engages at 4400 on a stock USDM GSR.

not exactly but think what you wanna think
not exactly but think what you wanna think
If your oil is too low vtec can't engage at all. I knew someone with a gsr that couldn't figure out why his vtec wasn't working. After he checked his oil which was really, really low it and refilled it, it started working again.

you may be right that there are definite points where the stages change, but ive done it over and over again, and i THINK I hear it change depending on throttle position.
Not to say your wrong or anything, but is this stated in the manual?
What proof is there, because obviously i'm not the only one thinking this...?
please don't just act like were dumb and say, think what you want, can you show us proof...were all here to learn
thanks

Um, proof? Do a search buddy. Stock gsr(usdm) x-over into vtec at 4400, secondary butterflies open at 5700. And about the different throttle positions, vtec will only engage when a certain oil pressure is reached. It will not engange under granny driving.
As all of the others have said VTEC is engaged at 4400 RPM. There is no secondary VTEC or anything like that. VTEC is either on or off. There are IAB's (butterfly valves in the intake manifold) that are engaged by vacuum at 5750 RPM. On a bone stock GSR I have noticed that VTEC isnt as noticeable as the IABs engaging.
