A friend of mine was wondering if the above combination will work. I'm assuming the itr pistons will work in b18a motor (using the b18a non vtec head). If piston-to-valve clearance isn't an issue, is there anything that needs to be done to the rods for the pistons to fit? TIA

 

some machining will need to be done on the rods, but i want to know minimum valve-to-piston clearance also.

My son built his LS 95 with ITR pistons with a slight overbore and it runs great.
No changes made to the rods. Good luck!

 

He didn't have to mill the rods 1mm on each side to fit ITR pistons? Usually the thinking is that only JDM B16 P30 pistons will fit on LS rods without any modification necessary.

if i slap a gs-r head on my ls swap with itr piston.
will that to be high of CR to be a daily driver??

i had a b18b with a fully built head including 404 cams...the block had jdm itr pistons in it with ls rods...ran GREAT

Just do p30 or pr3 pistons. Those won't require any modifications and will give higher CR than the p73 pistons. The PCT pistons will give about 12.5:1 with an LS head.

The Vtec Pistons have deeper valve reliefs so there is no need to worry about piston to valve clearance. Plus non-vtec cams tend to have mild lift characteristics.

These pistons will NOT work in a b20 block. 81mm vs. 84mm

I have an LS block w/ p30 pistons and a b16 head. It is great for a DD. A p72 head will yield about .1 to .2 higher comp ratio.

PR4 and PR3 rods are wider than p72, p73 and PCT rods. Hence the modifying of the pistons or rods whenever you choose to mix/match combos.

Anything is possible with a skilled machine worker/shop. Besides you will have to get the wristpins pressed into the rods anyway.

 

What OEM combination will require no machine work/modifications?
And or what will be the easiest OEM setup with PR3 or P30 pistons?

ls rods dont need to be milled for oem itr pistons. And your valve clearance is good-to-go. I ran with this set up for a while. But theres really no power. If you want more power after that setup, just go ls vtec. blocks already done.

 

But I understand CTR/B16 pistons have a higher compression as stated above; also...

Exactly, just get some p30s from Hmotorsonline and call it a day. Done.

RS Machines also sells a variety of pistons for non-VTEC use with ITR/CTR/B16 etc. designs. That includes 84mm pistons, in case anyone is wondering.
