Default Can u turn off the airbags?

this may sound like a stupid question... but i found out about a month ago that i have a baby on the way. i love the fact that the civic has so many airbags as a safety feature. but i'm worried because when the baby comes and he/she goes in his/her car seat i'm worried that it wont be safe due to so many airbags. i would just put it in the front seat if i can turn OFF the airbags on the passenger side. the back seat will be a bitch to get in and out of with a baby in my arms. i'm just concerned that if i get into a fender bender, the rear passenger airbag will deploy and throw the car seat out the rear drivers side window! i know that sounds extremely far fetched, but this is my first child and i am being EXTREMELY overprotective already. so i just wanna knwo if i can turn em off? should i just pull a fuse? i'm going to try and see if i can trade in my fg on an fa. any insight?

oh and here is the car seat i'm getting...

i think i've read in the manual that if the "passenger" or whatever is in the passenger seat is less than a certain amount of pounds, the passenger airbag is automatically turned off. a safety feature for when you do have a kid in the front seat. i got curious when the "passenger airbag off" light went off when i was transporting a television. but yea check out your manual about that, im sure you pretty much got this covered.

with that being said. Congrats!!!!!

I have a child an man you would be impressed with the room in the back with a child seat in. And as for the airbags I don't think that the side curtains would reach the child.

i believe you can have the dealer deactivate specific airbags. I've heard of people having it done before due to losing love ones by airbag related deaths....

will that raise your insurance, or will they charge you.. i think its a dealer case by case basis

It is a huge pain in the ***. I have a 6 month old and along w/ my 07 Si Sedan, I also have a 99 Civic EX. Don't be lazy about putting your kid into the back. The front seat, even w/ the airbags off is still way more dangerous than the back. Just get a child seat like the one in the link. You put the base in your car, then lock the seat into the base. It takes like 2 seconds to insert and remove the baby.

http://www.elitecarseats.com/E...2.pro

you can even buy extra bases (part you lock the seat into)

I agree completely. Me and the wife went to target and bought a seat with a base for like $50 and then ordered another base and it works great. I think the latch system is one of the greatest inventions ever. Just some advice put the seat in the middle of the back seat.

Thats correct on the infant in the front seat. In almost every state this is illegal, much less unsafe! I was a deputy sheriff for a few years and have done safety nco work in the military...............................But I love that seat! Why didnt they have those when my gang was that small! Its great! Cograts!

This true and you can test it yourself. Every morning, on my way to work, I lay my computer bag on the passenger seat. With my computer and all my finance binders in the bag, it weights about 30 pounds. Everytime I notice the little
warning light telling me the passenger airbag is disabled.

I don't what the weight limit is, but it should be easy to get.

Congrats on the new member of the family. Piece of advise, get rid of your off-spring before they become teenagers. lol j/k

I just read the other posts and the article. I have not had an infant in my car for 16 years. The last kid I had, rode in the back seat of my Astro van, before they had all the rear and side airbags and such. It sounds like it is best to put your child in the back seat.

Regarless and to answer your original questions, yes, there is weight sensor for the passenger airbag.

i wanna say 80lbs is what is needed for the sensor to activate your airbags. i read it in the manual somewhere when i first bought the car

good luck with fatherhood......the best thing that ever happened to me.

What about vehicles such as pick ups and 2 seat roadsters like Miata and S2000?

Me personnally if i owned a vehilce like that then i'd get rid of it for something more practical. you have 9 months to figure out your car situation. and if you can't do that because of financial limitations or whatever then those people shouldn't be having kids in the first place.

just my opinion.

appreciate it ben. i'm not sure what is gonna happen with all of this car situation. i'll definitely check into the babyseat shown in the above link. if its easy to get in and out and is safe then i will definitely look into it. and u know u gotta stay fresh in the dirty dirty mang! haha

as for that, financial situations are one thing, a pregnancy is another. if someone doesnt believe in abortion or adoption then the only choice is to keep the child and do everything possible to make it work. if that means i have to get rid of my car completely and get a beater to be able to afford it, then so be it. i may not be in the best financial situation as of yet, but i also graduate college right after the baby is born. and i should be starting my internship this coming spring. so hopefully i will be making double what i am now and i can figure it out from there. i'm planning ahead just enough to know that the baby is taken care of. that is my only goal. hence the turning off teh airbags, trading in on a 4 door (i still want an si man!), etc

and however said something about putting the locking system for the baby seat in the middle... will that work? will it not wabble since the middle is elevated over the passengers seats? i would rather have the baby in the middle so i could still put stuff on either side. plus i could see the baby better in the rear view.

and before anyone throws out a comment about it, i am not the same driver i was a few months ago. i have been taking it uber easy on the car here lately. and when she is in the car i drive like an old woman. hell i even now brake a little at green lights just to make sure some stupid ******* isnt gonna run it. just wanted to point that out before someone made a comment about my amazing ability to screw things up

Would the curtains in the rear hit the baby seat if it was in the middle I wonder, aside from no rearward visibility it would be a bitch getting him/her out. And Justin doesnt lie, he is a pretty calm driver after popping an engine and tranny

my sister and brother in law have a 4 month old and drive a TL and a tahoe. they said that the locking baby seat is not very good to put in the middle. they said its best to put it on the side that is easiest to get it in (passenger side since the seat slides forward much easier) and take it to the dealer and have them deactivate that sides airbags. so that is what i shall do. keep the car, and keep the baby seat, lose the airbags
