Default Planning for building my B16A

Ok, I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times, and I'm just as sure that this will generate 100 different responses from 100 different people.

So, let em clarify: I have a JDM B16A installed in my 89 CRX Si. I plan on keeping it naturally aspirated, so no turbo thoughts at all. I would like togo faster, Much faster. So far, engine mods are: AEM intake, DC 4-2-1 header and custom 2.25" exhaust. I'm thinking about rebuilding the motor from the ground up basically. I'd like to know what good experiences people have had with building B16s in general. What did you do? How fast are you going? What kind of reliability do you have?

I'm thinking for right now:

-new pistons (Civ Type-R?)
-new cams (ITR, CTR?)
-adjustable cam gears
-port and polished head
-ecu and/or chip upgrade

Realisitcally, what else is there? I've thought about looking into a Jun stroker kit or something similar, or should I just try and find a GS-R block? Would that be a more reasonable alternative? Anyone know what the total height of a B16A/B18C hybrid is? I'm assuming (which means I'm probably wrong) that the extra 7mm of height comes from the extra travel of the pistons for the 0.2L of displacement, so a B16/18C hybrid motor would be as tall as a GS-R motor?

Any thought or help is greatly appreciated. Email is fine as well if someone has some good input.

Fred

Well, this was my plans for an all motor B16A before the bed of a truck came through my windshield.

ITR intake manifold
CTR pistons/rings
rods (never decided what kind)
cams (ITR/CTR, Toda, Skunk) with corresponding valvetrain and gears
mild head work
Hondata
and of course all the bolt ons and fuel and ignition upgrades.

Would have been nice, but my next project will be a CRVTEC.

I would go with a stroker kit(if you don't want to mess around buying arts by parts) Also think about the crank.... all-motor cars would be even faster with a lighted/strenghten crank. And after all that you'll need to spend a lot of time tuning it.

if u really wanna build it up u better have a lot of dough. because with the b series motors being as flexible as they are with parts you have millions of options. you will more than likely decide on some cams or something else and sooner or later find out that another combo will be faster. my personal suggestion (not that it is backed by a phd or anything) would be to stick with high quality and try to stick with a minimal variation of brands. i would trust almost all of your valvetrain parts to JUN or Toda. they have that **** down. unless you are on a smaller budget then get all ITR ****. JDM ITR intake and exhaust manifold. for most motor parts though i would recommend spoon or mugen. i mean really... who knows better than honda on how to make hondas fast.

good luck with your journey young man whatever u do.

Well, let me put it this way: it's my daily driver when the weather is nice, so I'm not looking for a real peaky track monster. I guess with a small displacement motor, you're pretty much looking at that anyway...but that's not my ultimate goal. Low-13s would be sufficient. I think with some minor mods, that can be accomplished rather easily. Anything lower than that would be serious racer turf, and that I'm not.

Can anyone make any good recommendations for shops that do a good job with stuff like porting and polishing heads, balancing cranks etc etc. I live in th middle of WI, so my only option is King motorsports. While I know they'd do an excellent job, and plan on asking them about it, it's sure to cost me an arm and a leg.

Thanks...Fred
