Default rebuilding my c5 how exact is plastigauge

i'm plastigauging my mains and it calls for .024 as the minimum, and .030 for number 3. according to my helms manual. now i'm getting readings just a hair thinner although i'm using the exact color bearings that were installed in it. and the machine shop said it will take std. bearings. just need your input. thanks

Are you saying that your clearance is a hair thinner? as in you have less than .024" clearance? If you do plastiguage correctly it is fairly accurate, but not within a .001"

What are you reading? .020"? or thinner?

i'm not reading any less than .020mm. if i had to estimate on main 3 it's at like .023mm and the minimum is .030mm. and on all the others are also around .023mm maybe a little less. i just looked at the bearings by code on the block instead of the color on the bearing and it looks like somebody put all thicker bearings in.... probably why i'm getting noise from the bottom end. so now i get to reorder at least 3 new main bearings

yea the plastigage is only for horseshoes and handgrenades closeness. Don't rely on it for a close tolerance engine like yours. The codes on the block and crank are what you want to use unless you've had machine work done the codes should be spot on

What bearings are you using?... Dunno if you stated. Sounds like your bearings are too thick. A word from the wise, try to find bearings that land you in the middle of the clearances.

You could run a lil snug on the Rods and a bit loose on the mains, but you'll lose oil pressure. you could slightly shim the pump and port it... My next rebuild, I'm going to rework as many of the oil passages as possible.

One more thing, take the time to have a GOOD machinist MIC your Mains, Rods and crank. This will save you so much time when deciding which bearings select. If you need info on how to decipher the numbers once you have them and choose bearings, let me know. I stole a formula from the late, great Earl laskey.

Who's "Chad"? And why does he determine what's good or bad?
