not another f'ing ebay turbo question!!!
yep sure is.
i need to know if anybody has taken a egay turbo(t3 style) like the one below and taken it apart(brand new) and rebuilt it with good names seals/parts??
because all i ever hear about this turbos is how bad they are since they leak oil quickly. so why not replace the crappy seals with better ones and call it a day?

because turbos don't have actual 'seals' it's a step in the shaft, that is all - unless by some very rare chance you have carbon seals in your turbo.

i thought doing this, rebuilding a ebay turbo with REAL Garrett parts, but decided to just get the REAL deal **** instead. im sure it would work, and if your rebuilding it yourself, you can save some money but if your sending it off to get "Garretized" or whatever then you may end up paying the same amount as a BRAND NEW one that is the REAL DEAL....
Basicly what is done to make it reliable is: change the CHRA, change the turbine shaft/wheel, change the dynamic or carbon seals.
The reason? The shaft is usually poorly ground & out of balance, the chra isn't machined all that precisely (friction surfaces misaligned), and the steel or carbon used for the seals is very poor quality. You may get lucky with the housings & wheel, but don't hold your breath. Its unlikely to find a compressor wheel & housings that are low-porosity cast material thats not of **** materials.
Its usually cheaper to get 'garrettized' if your egay turbo is already blown, but even with them for under $200 shipped now, its better to pay the 500-600 for a new, good turbo.

seems like a good price being a garrett.
what do you guys think?
