New eBay 57 Trim Turbos. . .
The kind that claim to be "computer balanced." Just curious if anyone has messed with them yet?
I'm probably not going to buy one, since I already have a nice turbo, but I'm curious, and looking for a good thread to read today. eBay turbo threads can be entertaining! Hah hah. . .
But really!

Meh, not really that far fetched of an idea that they would be able to afford and use a computerized shaft balancer IMO.
Who knows.

This is coming from someone with 2 HT posts, GO FOR IT. THERE BAD *** TURBOS.
this makes me think of the advertisements for drugs.
This drug is the best drug ever made.
warning: may cause death, the ***** for weeks, and perhaps a bonar for 48 hours
Buy top of the line cheep turbos.
warning: it is a bad idea to use this turbo on your only car!!! may crack into 748.99 pieces causing death, injury to your engine, and perhaps humiliation when propping up your hood at car shows.

Alright, you get what you pay for, plain and simple. Please post a link so we can take a look. Odds are it's junk. But in some cases I've seen people rebuilding name brand turbos and putting them on ebay, sooo, a link might solve the dilema.

Re: New eBay 57 Trim Turbos. . . (sohczcturbo)
Sorry, I ended up being out of the office all day right after I posted my initial post, so I haven't been able to enjoy what has definitely turned out to be an entertaining thread!
Anyway, yep, I'll see if I can come up with a link for one of these turbos to further the discussion.
Really, I was interested to see if anyone has tried any of these possibly newer generation, and had obtained different reliability results that the older ones? You know the Chinese industries, they start copying things, some are junk, and others end up being sold by brands we all accept as sellers of quality products. Most of the time we don't even notice these products are made in China.
I know this whole eBay turbo thing gets beat around on here all of the time, but eventually these guys might start building some quality. . . It's not really that far fetched.
Anyway, I'll post up a link when I can find it!

Yeah, what is it, if you have a bonar for 3 days you have to go to the doctor or something? Heh heh heh. . .
Anyway, here are some links:
Here's a nice blingy one with (fake I'd assume) anti-surge ports:

And here's one of the "economy" priced ones:

In my opinion, the turbo's aren't worth it. Mine lasted 3 months at 8 psi before blowing a seal, and within days of that it destroyed the whole turbo. After the seals blew I "gimped" it around town from shop to shop in hope's of finding one that would rebuild it, most wouldn't even touch it, and one said he would but only if I'd pay for garret internals to go in it. Before I ever made it back the turbo blew lol. Just stick with the proven stuff. $250 is bit much to play guinea pig with for me, but then again, to every man his own.

Curious though, was yours one of the new ones that claim to be individually computer balanced?
If it wasn't, then it really doesn't add to the knowledge base of whether anything has changed or not.
Thanks anyway for the input though, even if it wasn't one of the new ones!
EDIT: Oh, here's the low-bucker I was looking for before:

Re: New eBay 57 Trim Turbos. . . (Tjabo)
My first eBay turbo was $250 shipped and lasted 4500 miles at 10 pounds before the hotside oil seal went. Since my manifold and downpipe were set up for the eBay turbo, I just bought another for $190 shipped.. and oil is already shooting out of the compressor side. I used to think they were a great deal for people on a budget, but 250+190 = 440. In other words, I could have gotten a garrett 57 trim for an extra $100 or so more and it would (most likely) still be functioning perfectly. I will not be buying another eBay turbo when this one goes.. unless, of course their new balancing technique helps oil seals

When you consider a properly cared for Garrett will last for 40k, you really can't beat the price. You can get the OTS 57trim for around $500, and will last if you don't overspin it, over pressurize the chra, or toss piston & valve chunks or rocks through it. They are also rebuildable for about the price of the ebay turbo.
IMO I highly doubt they are balanced all that well, but the pictures do seem to show a bit of grinding done on the tips of the turbine and compressor wheels.

The secret to making these turbos last somewhat longer and perform well, is the use of a oil restictor. The seals blow easily without them.

But the secret to make your setup last longer is to not use one at all.

this is news to you ppl ??
all of the "ebay" turbos i've got from over a year ago have all been balanced.
i actually happen to have a 57trim thats taken apart in the garage right now what has both sides of the shaft shaved off and a reff. mark on the compressor side.
all of the turbos i got worked great and made good power numbers.
there t3 60 trim(the one with the internal gate and a v band DP) made 300whp @ 20psi on my vitara/tt SOHC build. <<stock everything else.
the 57trim made 250whp on a bone stock b16@7psi.
they dont have anything bigger so i moved up to a holset but for anyone looking to make sub 400whp i dont see a reason why not to run one.

Where did I say they were good? I just said that they might be balanced.
