what causes engines to burn oil especially on high RPMs

High rpm's= fast up and down of the pistons causing a greater chance of blow by especially on a high mileage engine.

ive heard of switching to a slightly thicker oil but thats really old school "trick"

New rings, valve seals, and or rebuild. Don't worry about it too much, my friend's civic burns oil when he really hits the gas but its got 230k so its kind of expected.
