Hey all,
I have a problem with my 96 DX. The trunk leaks on the right side usually worse when it is sitting in the rain as opposed to driving. Any one have any suggestions on how to fix this?

i had that problem with my hatch i just got a tube of silicone and ran it all around the seal and it stopped . maybe something u for u to try.

 

you need to go back to Honda and ask for a replacement weather strip. thats what it sounds like.

 

Before you start blindly replacing parts in the hopes that it will fix your problem, do a leak test.

You're going to need a friend to do this.

One person get in the trunk with a flashlight. Make sure the trunk interior has been dried first and the entire trunk liner has been removed so you can see what's happening right away.

Okay, now the outside person starts AT THE BOTTOM of the trunk. The outside person pours water on the bottom of the trunk area while the outside person watches for any leaks.

If there's a leak, you've narrowed it to where it would be. If there is a leak in the seal, you should be able to see a crack in it. If it comes from the taillights, remove and inspect the seals there. If it comes from the taillights, those flat seals probably need to be replaced. You can make your own with craft supplies (there are directions somewhere on here - but for hatches - same for coupes though).

If there is no leak, have the outside person pour water higher on the trunk.

Continue to go higher until you've narrowed the area.

My trunk leaks from way up high. We tested the bottom. Nothing. We tested midway. nothing. We tested the top. Nothing. We poured down the rear glass. It leaked into the trunk. My rear glass must be removed and resealed in order for my car to no longer leak. The glass stands a chance of breaking if I do this, and then I'll need replacement glass and I don't want aftermarket glass.

 

The trunk on mine leaks also, but its on the drivers side. The leak is getting worse, the inside of my trunk smells like wet dog. Im going to go to Honda and pick up the weather strip for the trunk and replace it. I think it costs like 30 bucks and it takes 30 seconds to do.

 

Yeah I really think its the weather strip thats getting hard and dry that causes leaks. I highly doubt that theres a hole where the water drains. Replace the rubber weather strip for a piece of mind.
