Unplug IACV and engine dies
I have had this happen to me twice now when I try to adjust my idle. I unplug the IACV and the engine dies. It started fine after the first time that this happened to me but I have not driven my car after it happened to me the second time(today).
I was about to post this exact same problem. Running a D16a6 on a 90 EX Sedan.
I've been having an idle problem. It's fine in park and neutral but in reverse or any of the drives (automatic) the engine idle dips and the steering wheel and car shakes somewhat violently. It's considerably worse when it is hot outside (engine temperature gauge same all the time).
Engine runs great normally but idles rough.
Ideas?

I have a D16a6 with I/H/E.
My car seems to run rough when there is moisture present(either humid, wet roads,or raining)
I found a cut out of my oxygen sensor so I replaced that today but I haven't driven it yet to see if it helped any.

sounds like ur auto clutch is draggin and or you need plugs/cap/rotor. I would say ur draggin more than usual though, although it is dupposed to drop a little bit when put in gear (they all drag)

I had considered the clutch problem, though I'm still not sure how that would coincide with increased environmental temperature and be considerably better in the late evening when it is much cooler out. May be a number of simultaneous problems.

To the original question, why would unplugging the IACV plug shut the engine off completely and nearly instantaneously? Vacuum issue?
Thanks.

Disconnect the battery for a minute or two. Then reconnect and let your car idle for 10-15 minutes. Let your computer analized some inputs and datas. Then start your idle adjustments again. Normally, when you disconnect your IAC/IACV your computer should bypassed and run based on previous datas. If you can get your hand on a buddy good known ECU, swap it over and see what happens. If not, I would check the IAC/IACV itself. If your car is old and has high milages, the IAC/IACV is a spring mechanism operated by the ECU supplying voltage to create magnetism force to push the rod/spring for opening and closing the air passage. I would take it out, see if the holes are dirty or clogged. Cleaning it would be a good idea. Supplying power and ground see if you can feel or hear any movements/motions, or clicking. Also, check your throttle body IAC/IACV bypass air passage, throttle plate, etc. are clean and free of gunk build up. They will restricts your air flow causing your engine to either run like crap, and/or died-out because of insuffient air. Those are just some ideas I would check first, obviously easiest to do. Factory throttle bodies are not recommended to be adjusted. If you have idle problem too high/low, or whatever, check for leaks, or clogged than to adjust your throttle idle adjustment screw. Doing so will throw off a lot of problems later on. Just some ideas, have fun and good luck.

My d16z6 also dies when it's unplugged and from what I understand it's "normal". Anyone??</TD></TR></TABLE>
It must not be normal since honda tells you to unplug it to adjust the idle.
JCRX I will check into the stuff you said.
