Loose A/C belt = squeeling?
A/C compressor was replaced last summer with a working one and it was also recharged.
It squeels REALLY loud. Even just at 2k RPM's. I tried pushing on the belt to see if there was play and sure enough, I can push it in a good 1/2" to 3/4". I'm assuming all it needs is a good tightening and it won't squeel anymore? Or do I need a new belt. It doesn't look torn or anything which I'm also assuming is a good sign.
But the thing is, when I drive in the rain, it doesn't squeel AT ALL. The water acts like a lube / dressing and prevents it from squeeling. So I don't see what tightening it would do. Hence why I'm confused.

Tighten the belt. That is why it squeals. I don't know why it is not making noise during rain, but it should if it gets wet because water will make a belt slip.
Just tighten it, and the squealing should go away. Here is a TSB to show the bolts, so you know what I'm referring to:

To adjust the belt,
1. Loosen the center pulley nut (loosen, do not remove).
2. Turn the adjusting nut on top for proper tension.
3. Tighten the center pulley nut.
A couple minute procedure.

you want a little play in the belt, push down about 1/4" tops, but not so tight it doesn't have any play at all.

you want a little play in the belt, push down about 1/4" tops, but not so tight it doesn't have any play at all.
Can I get away with tightening the A/C belt without removing the P/S belt? Or is removing it a must.
I finally had a chance to look in my engine bay today and it seems like a tight squeeze down there to get to the bolts.

Actually, just tried tightening it and it appears I can't even get the socket + socket wrench to fit over the pulley nut to loosen it so I can adjust the screw to tighten the belt. The socket wrench ALONE is too big. I can fit it down there but there's no where near enough space to get a socket onto the nut.

Nope, all I have is a 1/2" drive. I lack tools obviously.
So a 1/4" drive AND a socket would fit down there though?

it might be just me. i have a massive headache and ready to get off work. but i don;t think the one you are pointing out that is underneath is the right one. from the picture it looks to be the bolt for the pulley itself. you dont need to touch that one.
let me see if i can or if someone else can find a diagram.
EDIT: you will need to loosen the center nut of the idler pulley or the pivot bolt for the idler pulley bracket (depends on which compressor you have). Sorry, i can't find a diagram right now.
its just the tensioning for the A/C belt... there's only so many bolts. just dive in, you'll figure it out.

upon further inspection, i think i located the bolts you are looking for. stupid headache... cant even see straight.
anyway, the lime green arrow points to the pivot arm i think that needs to be loosened so you can then adjust the same squared adjustment bolt.

I tightened both nuts as much as I could before I started to slip and strip.
Even if it does start squealing again, at least I know what I'm up against the next time and I can just tighten them even more.
