Default car backfires bad?????

ok so i put a new head gasket on my sohc zc and at first i couldnt get the timing belt tight but then figured out it was the spring on the tensioner..so i finallye lined the cam gear to tdc and the lower pully also but wen i started it it has so much hesitation and then it backfires like it will take forever to get to like 4,000 rpm and then it starts to backfire like crazy so i was just wondering if anybody knew wat was wrong with it...backfire means non ignited gas right so isnt that off timing...but they are both on tdc...so ne bodys help will be appreciated
