sounds like an ignition related problem but it is difficult to tell without more info.

when the tach goes "wild" it is usually the igniter(located in the distributor) maybe it was a bad one???? you could open up the distributor cap and double check the quality of the connections on the igniter inside.

maybe try to change your spark plugs and spark plug wires.

give more info and detail and hopefully we can figure it out.

Are you throwing any CEL codes? It kinda sounds like your in limp mode.

When you installed your new distributor, did you adjust the timing with a timing light? If not, maybe your timing is off.

incorrect.

to the OP....what mods have you done to the engine if any? what sort of managment are you running?
sounds like the ignitor is fuxxored....id look into sourcing a new one or a working used one...im not sure where your located but i do have a few layin around...

check all your grounds and make sure all the other ignition components are up to par
