Default Ecu code 16 after a headgasket install

Hi all,

I had a friend change the headgasket on my sohc zc yesterday for a new one with arp's and now i have the injector code 16.

When I start the car it feels like it is starting but very very slowly and gradually and i need to hold the key in for a good 10 seconds while it starts itself. it then idles at around 500rpms and feels like it wants to die for about a minute. then the idle is rock solid at 800 rpms and it doesn't miss or sound weird.

when i picked up the car it was doing that but I started driving and it seemed fine. the engine feels smoother then before and i tried to boost for about 2-3 seconds and it felt like the motor was a bit weaker and it started to build boost a bit higher in the powerband then before.

I drive it on the highway for 2 minutes and my a/f gauge eventually goes to lean, almost off the gauge completely.

Here's the weird part, the car doesn't sound weird, it doesn't idle rough and it doesn't bog at all. code 16 stayed on the whole time driving home.

I was also barely pressing the gas and didnt rev past 3k.

I didn't have a code before the headgasket install, my a/f gauge read stoic at part throttle and rich during accel.

main relay seemed fine before also but haven't checked yet to see if that's the problem.

all clips and plugs look secure on the dsm 450's and they worked fine before.

any help or insight would be appreciated

Code 16 is for your fuel injectors. Check over your wiring.

Do not hit boost. Just like your A/F gauge is reading, you are running lean. Thats why it took long to start up too.

Check to make sure everything is plugged in, all the wiring is correct and that none of the wires are pinched.

is it possible for my car to be running lean but the motor does not bog and it doesn't sound like it's running on 3 cyl's or anything like that???

code 16 is fuel injectors.. check over all wiring, make sure you didnt pinch the wire in between the manifold and fuel rail when you put everything back together

sorry to bring this back up but i checked all the plugs and the stock wiring and everything is on nice and tight.

I did find that one of the 2 nuts holding the injector harness to the rail is missing could that give me a lean mixture and that code? doesn't look like i have any leaks in the system.

I will reset the ecu tomorrow when i have a few minutes to look at it and hope this clears the code and it only came on because of the compression test.

any ideas other then that?

well A/F gauges are not always correct. Lean smell has a bit of a metal/werid smell to it..

i can't smell really good so i don't know

I will borrow a friends wideband soon and see what is happening. Hopefully it is just a bad connection on the gauge side but the engine did feel like it had less power when i stepped on it the first time just after the headgasket install.

Tomorrow night i figure this out!

thx all

Don't bother with the wideband set up. Your car is running poorly with a lack of power, which in this case verifies a fuel concern. I'd trust the gauge you have. Your injector wiring is fine if the car is not missing. Don't dick with it. You have some sort of fuel mixture problem; honda's aren't prone to mixture issues because of vacuum leaks, since they run speed-density management. So start looking at fuel control and supply possibilities. Are you using a rising-rate fuel pressure regulator? Check fuel pressure. And check functionality of your IAC while you're at it. Just a couple of things to check...

It was actually a code from the compression test with the harness disconnected on the fuel injectors. I reset the ecu and it is now fine!

does need a better tune though
