96 civic HX. THE NOTORIOUS CVT TRANSMISSION...die bitch die
i an 96 hx with the notorious cvt tranny. When its in low rpm's after leaving a stop sign or any dead stop my dash rattles violently. Am i due for a transmission fluid change or is my tranny just done for? I got the car with 104,xxx miles and it now has 137,xxx miles, im not sure when the car had its last transmission fluid change. Also the lower transmission mount by the passenger side wheel well seems to be out. (the rubber one, i hear that hx's have an extra mount.) If my tranny is done for, do u guys think it would be cheaper to get an auto to manual swap or just replace the tranny? Thanks in advance for your help guys.

You more than likely need a fluid change, and/or the start clutch on the driven pulley shaft could be worn out, causing a vibration. What color is the fluid, and what kind of particles are in it?
That mount is not really a crucial mount, it is of the same design as the A/C mount, and car that did not have it did not have this mount, also the fact that motor mount kits only include the 3 big mounts also supports the fact that it is not major.
Yes they have a torque converter.

yesterday when i went to get the neo gens put on for the rear the mechanic said "yo your tranny fluis is really dirty.: So im guessing im over due for a tranny fluid change. There were little tiny scraaps of metal in the fluid also.
Use the CVT fluid, if your shifting does not improve, most likely the start clutch and/or the steel band is worn, causing it to shake when pulling/pushed by the pulleys. You might have damaged the pulleys too, but the belt is the weaker of the two.
OK guys, if you go to CVT WORLD.com you can educate yourselves. According to them, there is no torque converters utilized in this type of transmission. I have a 97 civic LS that has been doing the same thing, shutters like the space shuttle on take off. Its hard to find any info on how or what the correct procedure is for the fix on this. I have found out that through the TIS@dot.gov you can order all and any (TSB) Tech Service Bulletins for any vehicle which will tell the secretes to what and how the manufacturers are doing for the fix. It's really hard to get TSB as they like your money. This gov organization can charge a small fee also. Nothing is free. Also, I have been to four service places and all will charge between $3700 and $4650 to fix. Not on my watch.
As for flushing the transmission, any sudgestions on the proper procedures for that? Thanks for any info, share the wealth.

or.....try to sell the car.......but good luck selling it with a fubar tranny......

i have a 97 hx, and it does this every now and then, its mostly when applying light throttle on a slow start...i've been tryin to get around to changin that fluid out but it doesnt look too bad so im not killin myself about it....so what else is needed to convert to say an ex tranny?? Sorry if it seems like im thread jackin..
^^^ you cant just swap any old auto in place of a cvt, you have to replace with another cvt unless you want to do a hell of a lot of conversion. The wiring, computer, mounts, etc for the cvt is way different then the standard auto. If you are willing to do all that, then put in a manual transmission.
AS far as whats involved with that conversion, ive done one on my 96 auto. Had to replace mounts, intake manifold, ecu, and do some rewiring. Your situation should be at least that hard if not harder with the cvt. My opinion, if you really want a manual trans, either sell the car as it sits now, or watch ebay and get another cheap cvt to swap in and then sell it for a manual car. The conversion isnt worth time/hassle.
My case was a little bit different in that the engine was blown so everything was going to be apart anyway and I didnt want to spend all the time/money and still have a damn auto.
My $.02
