Default Sooo I replaced my brake pads...

Hi there guys, fist time posting long time reader. Had a problem with my brakes the last few weeks that was intermittant and I finally broke down and replaced the pads. Was a high pitched grinding noise and various speeds from the front passenger side wheel. Seemed to go away when I would touch the brakes while in motion so I assumed it was a worn down brake pad. In any case..

Went to Autozone and got what the rep said was a factory replacement set for the front. No problem geting them off on the passenger side. I removed the whole braking system from the rotor (sorry for non technicial terms yet, im doing this off memory) and replaced the pads. When I was doing the Drivers side though the problem arrose.

They wouldnt fit on without judicous use of a rubber mallet.

We used a C-clamp to push the piston back as far as we could and that pad fit just fine, it was behind the metal by just a bit. It was the other pad that gave me trouble. It seemed like it just wouldnt fit in.. Pic for clarification (not from my project, just shamelessly stolen for clarification)

In any case, we were able to more or less force it on.. but now I have run into 2 problems.

Major Problem -
Brake gets hot enough that you can feel it from behind the plastic wheel cover about 2-3 inches away after 15minutes of driving with hard braking.

More minor problem -
It feels soft to me. I need to go drive another car to make sure but I feel like I almost have to completely push the brake to the floor...which I can do btw. I dont recall EVER being able to do that before.

Ideas on what happened?

Your minor problem seems worse to me. Have you tried checking the level of brake fluid?

Your major problem, is typical in my opinion because when energy changes states it creates heat as a by product. So I don't think its a problem especially because you said hard braking.

I wouldnt worry about it except that the Passengers side I can touch the wheel cover and feel no heat. the drivers side is definately Hot.

RE: the minor prob, im not 100% sure. My wife claims it feels exactly the same to her as it did before. Maybe Im just being paranoid..

jack the car up and make sure the caliper didnt freeze. you should be able to turn the wheel fairly easily

did you disconnect the brake lines when you pushed the piston back into the caliper? you might have gotten air in the brake lines and that is why you might be having a "soft" pedal

Nope, never touched the brake lines except to move them around some. I did remove the cap from the resevoir tho.

Turns out I had a frozen plug. Not any of the screws but the plug that adjusts how hard the caliper hold onto the pads. One side was frozen, thus one of the sides of my (non piston side) pad was burned WHITE.

Any clue if this will be reusable?

Plug? Do you mean the metal shims that hold onto the Pad? How many miles does your car have?

one of the most important question did you actually remove the brake fluid cap before doing the process

dide you just take the caliper off the caliper mount , or the whole assembly just like that in your example pic? take it back apart , make sure there is no rust or swolleness in between the little clips on each slot that spring load the pads , and the caliper mount. needless to say , you shouldnt have to beat the pads into thier slots on the caliper mount. the reason your brakes are burning and hot , is cause the pads cant move freely in thier holders , so when you apply the brakes , they squeeze the rotor , and cant let go , if you dont fix it asap , youl ruin your rotors , if they arent already.
