Default 230000 miles, more to go?

Hey everyone, I am thinking to buy a 1999 honda civic hatchback next couple days. just have few question hope you guys can help me out. I know Honda's engine is strong and I see lots of people go over 200000+ miles, but 230000 miles is alot... I want this car to be my daily drive for like year or two until I save enough money to do engine swap. Do you guys think $3000 for this car is good price? and what maintenance should be done if I bought this car? Thanks frany advice.

1700-2100 I would say would be a fair price. In my area, I see 96-00 2 doors, hatches, and 4 doors with around 115K on them in mint condition going for no more that 3000. KBB the car and see what they say, I would offer the guy around 2000 if the car is mint.

5800??? Did you set it as private party? That **** better be immaculate inside and out for 5800 w/ 10 miles

Tell the guy you will give him 2k because at the mileage something is most likely going to need replacing if not a whole new motor in the near future.

actually it is for sale in dealership. It is hard to find a 96 up Hatchback, most of those car either has bad bodykit, no AC or power steering etc.... I have been looking for hatchback for a while, how much will cost to just swap an same engine into it?

thats a bit too high for that much mileage. Is everything maintenced on that car? My buddy bought a 89 crx si for 1200...condition was close to mint and the motor had over 200k on it. The car/motor ran pretty good.

no way i'd spend that much, that dealership probably didn't pay 1200 for it.

and i dont see how ek hatches are hard to find, maybe certain colors (white) but i see ek's for sale constantly.

and no, i wouldn't feel comfortable depending on a car with 230,000 miles as my only car for 2 years, unless you're mechanically inclined....

but if you don't buy it someone else will..

I would pay between 1500-and 2500 for that car max. With the mileage it has... I wouldn't depend on it for anything more than 6 months from this point on. I mean, If you would purchase it for that much I would do a swap asap so you don't suffer from any consequences do to the mileage in the near future.

I bought my 96 EX with 180,000 miles on it, and put over 30,000 miles on it in the year (not even) I've owned it. Not one single time has it left me stranded and the only repair I have had to make is an upper ball joint and control arm. Get it checked out if possible and go from there.

Thanks guys. I will go check local shop to see how much will cost me to swap same engine into it. Like I said, I want to save up some money and put K20 into it. used to own an turbo SW20, just sold it and want to find a comfortable daily drive, and also fun to drive.

Although the statement is moot for many of us because we are mechanically inclined. Depending on it's current state and how it was maintained in the past a car with 230,000 could easily survive 2 years. My CRX was a beater for $800 bucks with 280,000 and I drove it hard for another 20,000 till she was stolen.

evedtintly no one in the post realizes that miles dont matter ............. as long as the car has been well maintained and has 500k on it still better then a car with 70k that some ricer owned and beat the **** out of for the past 7 years .......... i had a 2000 hatch with like 340k miles on it sold it and still running strong !!!!!

i say 3k as long as the body is clean and the car doesnt seem ragged out i would buy it

Certain areas just don't usually have at least one body style. For example, in Dover, DE, where I was raised, I've only seen ONE 6G hatch for sale ever. I remember one ricey red hatch that drove around town and I've seen a handful of hatches in the area through the years. They just aren't very common there.

Mileage does matter to a degree. Generally cars with higher mileage are in crappier condition.

I'd try to talk the dealership down by being concerned about the miles. I know when I bought my car from the dealer, I had them replace all filters and get me new tires to replace the four that were all different from each other.

If the body is rare in the area as you said it is, then just try to get the price dropped a little, maybe have them do a tune up on it, and pick it up.

Actually the dealership is 500 miles away form where I live.. I dont want to go there and come back without the car, that is why I asked everyone of u's opions. what maintenance should be done? all I can think is change all fluid, timing belt, water pump, spark plug, spark plug wire, anything else?

There should be a hatch closer to you than 500 miles away.

How long the motor lasts is really dependant upon how it has been maintained over the years. If it had proper oil changes and servicing, it should last you for a good long while. I do think the price is a bit steep for the mileage though. If you do get it, I wouldn't swap an engine in there till you had to. I bet you wouldn't even need it until you get your swap. D-series last forever!
