Now here is how VTEC is engaged:

There is a designated VTEC engagement set in the computer, I will use the GSR's, 4500 rpms.

Ok on a VTEC motor there are 3 lobes per cylinder instead of 2 like on a NON VTEC motor, so there are 3 rocker assemblies vice 2 rocker assemblies. On the cam shaft each outter lobes are identical with a larger lobe in the center. Now under normal driving out of VTEC this center rocker assembly is free moving meaning it is not making the valves open, only the two outer smaller lobes are operating the valves. At 4500 RPM's the ECU tells a selenoid, known as the VTEC selenoid to increase oil pressure across the head, what this does is not move the cam shaft, but locks a pin in each set of 3 rocker assemblies, so now ALL 3 ROCKER ASSEMBLIES MOVE TOGETHER. Now the middle larger lobe is operating the valves, and opening the valves MORE and LONGER(Also known as more LIFT and DURATION), this is VTEC in a nutshell.
