Help! clutch is gone? can't pass 55mph on 5th gear
For some odd reason my 93 civic coupe's 4th gear can not pass 40mph and the fifth gear can't past 55mph. The lower gears seem to be fine but, i can not travel on the freeway. Is this a clutch problem? The car has been back in forth from Fresno to L.A. within the week. I just barely did a basic oil, spark plug tune up on the car. Any help is appreciated thanks.
I don't want to risk causing more problem for the car. It just don't seem to want to go any faster than what the gears will let it. it's a EX and it was normal until another long drive to L.A.

Does the motor start racing while your staying at that 55 mph if it doesnt it wouldnt be a clutch prob I dont think, If your clutch wer slipping or blown it and was able to get up to that certain RPM before loosing grip the motor would start accelerating while you are going nowhere. Any bogging at all Accelerating before your car cuts off speed? Id think its a timing issue, spark plug gap could be incorrect, Timing could be off or your wires to dizzy may be on in the wrong order if you took them off during the tune up. Or you could be running out a cylinder or more I know when I a rocker arm it was broken where it would slide up and down the cylinder wall for a while at first and while it was doing this the car wouldnt go past just about 55MPH in fifth. So it was like i was running on only 3 cylinders.
Everything was fine until i reach L.A from Fresno then this happened. going from 90-100mph to L.A. had to be there at 8:30.

There is insufficient data to conclude any sort of problem. Your obviusly not mechanically inclined. If you can tell me what noises for car is making that differs from a normal driving car then its really out of my hands. I suggest you do alot more research on how a motor works, or hand it over to someone who knows more about diagnossing the problem.
drive about 30 mph and then put the car in 5th gear and floor it, if the car slips and the revs jumps then its you clutch, if the car bogs and trys to accelerate its another problem.
as one of the poster's asked before... is it revving high past a certain mph? if not, then it's not your clutch. when your clutch is slipping it'll feel as if you were launching... it'll rise... bounce, possibly hit the limiter and you won't be going anywhere. try and start in 5th gear.. see if u can go without stalling out. if it doesn't stall, then it's ur clutch.
