Help! snaped bolt off in head
so i was putting my valve cover back on and i over torqued two bolts and snapped them off inside the threads. Theres five bolts, 3 on top and 2 on the bottom i snapped the top middle bolt and bottom left bolt. btw its an F23. I cant get the broken portion out there in there to good so im gonna try and start it without them and see if it leaks. How am i gonna get those bolts out of the threads?!
you can try drilling a pilot hole into the broken portion and then reverse threading an easy-out into it and back it out. I hate easy-outs though. I've used them 3 times, first time I broke the easy-out in the hole, the second time it worked like it was supposed too and the third time the broken thread would turn so instead of breaking the easy-out I stopped trying. Keep in mind the worse thing to do with an easy-out is break it off in the part you are trying to get out.
If you think you can drill it right on center and keep it straight you can try to drill it to the tap drill size for that thread which would leave you with only the threads of the bolt and nothing in the middle. Then you can use a pick or something to work the threads out. Then run a tap back into the hole to clean it up.
If you don't feel confident in doing it yourself you could call a machine shop and see if they can do it on the car or if they need the head off to do it. I design milling tools at a machine shop and one of the local auto parts stores sends people here with problems like that and one of the guys in the shop will do the work. He usually charges $25.

sorry but a bolt-out isn't going to help if there isn't a nut/bolt head for it to grip onto.

yes, use the same method as described earlier.

i mean maybe sharpen a flattip screwdriver, hammer it to make and indention, and then use an impact screwdriver to get it out
pics of said bolts would help a lot too

i broke that same stud off on two different f22 heads, i just used an easyout, but there was nothing easy about it, pain in the *** for sure
same one is broke on mine too. I would suggest to go to the machine shop with it. the reason being is that they wouldn't even touch that on one that had been worked on before. I though it was bull but went to a few different shops, and had to end up drilling it out to and re-tapping it myself.
[QUOTE=JDM_Acccord]here's my issue... it's the bottom right portion of the header...
Not to be an ***, we all know what you ment but corection its a turbo manifold for future reference

I did the same thing man dont worry if you can take a center punch and small hammer and try to d- thread it by taping it around.. thats what I did whatever you do DONT I REPEAT DONT drill it out yourself it take a professional or you WILL be looking at a new head..thats my help
Ohh yeah get it done before you mess up your value cover gasket and possibly your value cover

I would only drill it if you feel comfortable and you are SURE you can drill straight in the center. Otherwise if you screw up the threads, you will have to oversize it and insert a helicoil.
Also, they make left hand jobber bits that you can try. If you soak it with WD or something, SOMETIMES they will come out by drilling it with a left hand bit. If you can get to it, it really is not hard if you take your time. I have done 2 myself and I am by no means an ASE cert. mechanic. Just be carefull, DO NOT TURN THE EZ-OUT TOO HARD WHEN TRYING TO GET THE BOLT OUT. Also, remember that the larger the hole you drill (after a pilot hole), the easier it will be to remove as well.
Good luck.
