I have an 06 Honda Civic EX. Every time I go over a quick small bump my something in the front passenger side of the car clunks. It only happens on smaller bumps such as railroad tracks, or small strips of replaced pavement for repair for utilities, or man hole covers. With large bumps it doesn't make any abnormal noises. It seems to only happen on more rattling bumps than large bumps, and as far as I can tell there doesn't seem to be any noticeable effects on ride quality only a very disturbing knocking/clunking sound. Also my car doesn't seem to sit quite level. It seems to dip about a half an inch towards the front passenger side.
I have been to the dealer and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with the shock, but I kind of expected that since it doesn't always happen. But I am finding the problem to be very irritating and disturbing and the sound is becoming more frequent and generally worse. Also I didn't tell the dealer that my car isn't completely level. Does anyone know what the problem could be, or does anyone have any advice. Thanks

PS my dealer is not trying to rip me off. They just can't justify changing a shock on warranty when they can't reproduce the problem. It's very frustrating because I am not making it up. It just is hard to reproduce the problem. I am hoping it gets much worse so that I can get it fixed while still under warranty.

I've seen a few posts on this same topic, sounds like it's common in the new Civics. Do a little bit of searching, should be at least 2 or 3 posts on this. 90% of the time a dealership won't be able to "reproduce" the problem.

I'm having the same problem. I made a post about it before; my car was making some odd noise and then they replaced my shock. Now it is making the same noise that you're describing and I'm waiting for them to get the part in.

Tell them to try driving over bumps and turns that are a little bumpy.

 

So have they fixed the shock and it's still making the noise?
I'm definitely going to have to go back in and get it fixed, but I don't want it to just break again. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm glad to know I'm not just making this up.

Rattle From Right-Front of Vehicle When Driving Over Bumps

SYMPTOM

A rattle from the right-front of the vehicle when driving over bumps at 15 to 20 mph (24 to 32 km/h).

PROBABLE CAUSE

The passenger's side hydraulic side engine mount is cavitating, making a rattling sound.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the side engine mount.

DIAGNOSIS


1. Place a wood block onto a floor jack, and position it under the oil pan at the end closest to the passenger's side engine mount. Raise the engine enough to insert the diagnostic spacer between the side engine mount and the bracket. Be sure to leave the spacer sticking out about 1/2 inch so it can be easily removed. Remove the floor jack.

NOTE :Installing the diagnostic spacer increases engine vibration at idle.

2. Test-drive the vehicle at the same speed and over the same type of road conditions that the customer says causes the noise.

NOTE :It's possible the noise can be recreated by driving 15 to 20 mph over a 1-1/2 to 2 inch drop in the road surface.

^ If the rattling is gone with the spacer placed between the side engine mount and the side engine bracket, go to the REPAIR PROCEDURE.

^ If the vehicle still rattles, remove the spacer and continue with normal troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Place a block of wood onto a floor jack, and position it under the oil pan at the end closest to the engine side mount. Remove the diagnostic spacer. NOTE : Adjust the engine height as needed while doing the following steps.


2. Remove the bolt securing the A/C line, then remove the three bolts holding the upper torque rod in place.

NOTE :Use new flange bolts when reinstalling the upper torque rod.

3. Push the torque rod toward the rear of the vehicle, and rotate it clockwise 90 degrees so it's out of the way.


4. Remove the middle bolt on top of the side engine mount bracket, the bolt holding the ground cable to the side engine mount bracket, and the bolt and nut holding the side engine mount bracket to the engine block. Remove the side engine mount bracket.


5. Remove the bolt and bracket holding the ABS brake lines to the engine mount stiffener. Remove the two bolts holding the engine mount stiffener to the side engine mount, and the bolt holding the engine mount stiffener to the body. Remove the engine mount stiffener.

6. Remove the two bolts holding the side engine mount to the frame rail.

7. To make it easier to remove the side engine mount, remove the A/C bracket bolt so the A/C line can be gently pulled out of the way.

8. Remove the side engine mount.

9. Install the new side engine mount (rubber assembly), then reassemble the other parts in reverse order.

It seems that I have the same problem, but my VIN is 1HGFA15876L907705 which is not on the range the TSB has.

Does that mean that they can not fix it for me?? what do you recommend me to do?

I work at a honda dealer and alot of the 06-07 civics with very low milage are coming in and the struts are going bad if not the engine mount.

 

also new bulletin forleft side mount.

yeah well this week has been a series of dissapointments for me. I got the bump stop fixed and now theres no knocking noise. Then there was a squeaky clutch but it ended up being a loose gasket at the end of the exhaust manifold joint. They fixed that. NOW the same thing as this thread. I just got back and they said its the right front stut bar. Im telling you honda has alot of kinks to work out for the 08 models.

On another note I know the suspension is different on civics and civic si's. But would the STRUT bars be different?

Cause with my luck they would give me a normal civic strut bar and my car would blow up. ha

I work at a Honda dealer and one of the techs told me that the "clunking" noise is due to aftermarket springs not "sitting" right on the stock suspension setup. That's if you have aftermarket springs of course like I do. Cause i've been hearing that little popping/clunking noise to and that's what he told me.

If your stock suspension is doing it then something is most likely defective.
