b16a1 is first gen, meaning they only came OBD-0 and in cable tranny. 160hp
B16a2 is the second gen, meaning they are OBD-1 and in hydro tranny. 170hp(because the 2nd gen had a little higher compression ratio.

about your friend with the 94 civic. i can go that route alot of people do it. Just by the B16a1 complete changeover, sell the tranny (for alot) atleast $350... take the money and go get a used gsr tranny. I'm not sure about the ECU and wiring.... you can convert your car to OBD-0 and run the ECU that came with the changeover or call hasport and they can make you a new wiring haress so it's just plug and play. I know a lot of guys on the board knows how to do this but probably just don't want to answer(most likely because of the way you asked/phrased the question, it make you sound like newbi) but hey that cool... i'll help in whatever i can... even though i'm still a newbi myself

:
b16a2 is from the 99-00 civic SI and has 160hp

b16a SIRll is a hydro tranny with 10.4 compression and 170hp vs. SIRl cable tranny with 10.2 compression

tell him to get an LS motor ive seen complete swaps for 1600 dollars...

i asked it like this because i really don't know the answer. i'm more familiar w/ 1.8l's. so when it comes to 1.6's i'm still in the dark...no shame in that.

b16a2 has a higher cam profile. b16a1 is known for having the weakest cam in all b-series. i'm trying to get rid of mines for a gsr or itr/ctr cams.
