Default Intermittent Speedo and Cooling Fan Switch - VSS Troubleshooting

I have an issue where the speedo didn't work. Unplugged the VSS and plugged it back into the harness, worked fine. Had another issue where the cooling fan switch wasn't kicking on, but when I short the plug the fans come on. After messing w/ the cooling fan switch the speedo stopped again and I got Code 17, VSS Problem. Could these issues be related? Possible there is a bad ground? Also, when the speedo did work, when the tach hit 8000 rpm the speedo would jump 40+mph. 99 JDM ITR motor in a 2000 ITR.

Check and see if there is any corrosion on the plug for the VSS. Should be a greenish color.

I looked, the plug and sensor look clean, pins are still shiny. VTEC doesn't work so it's leading me to believe the problem lies somewhere in the engine harness.

I guess I could check the continuity from the VSS plug to where the engine harness plugs into the car harness near the shock tower.

Any other suggestions?

To bad your not closer, I've got a spare VSS you could try out.

Other than the connections, maybe it's in the wiring? Has the wiring ever been messed with?

just had obd1 injectors and a resistor box, but I cut that out and soldered in obd2 injector clips. the previous owner did have the car overheat because the cooling fan never kicked on. i'm guessing it's a wiring issue since I am having the same problem w/ a different engine and the same harness. i noticed that area of the wire harness is right by 2 coolant hoses, i wonder if the constant heat could affect the wiring?

i guess the cooling fan switch worked all along, i just wasn't patient enough to wait for it to come on. also i plugged an unplugged the VSS and it works now. i guess there is some corrosion inside the plug that I can't see. if it goes out again I'll just replace the plug.
