check for a blown fuse. if fuses are good, straight wire the fan motor directly to the battery to verify that it is working.

I believe the fan switch is a temperature sensor. When the car begins to heat up the switch kicks in, making the fan turn on.

To test whether you have a bad switch or fan, unplug the plug that goes from your engine harness to the switch. Then get a paper clip and short circuit the plug off the harness and fan should turn on and stay on while the paper clip is in.

If the fan does turn on when you throw a paper clip in there to jump the wires then it is most likely, actually almost 100% the switch. If the fan doesn't turn on it may be in the wiring or the cooling fan itself...

Thermostat, fan switch, fan switch relay, fan motor, the fan. All wires and plugs to and from components including fusing and relay.

this worse case senerio would be a bad... that thing theat activates teh fan when its hot it looks like a big spring.

If it works when it's being jumped is the wires are bad from the engine temp switch, assuming your engine temp switch isn't bad. Or your engine isn't getting hot enough

I was trying to be specific.

The only parts that have anything to do with my b16 radiator fan turning on, are a bunch of wires, a radiator fan relay, and what honda refers to as a coolant temperature switch, it plugs into the block and when it detects that the water is hot enough, it completes the circuit so the relay triggers the 12v line into the radiator fan. It's insane simple.

If your relay is capable of turning on the fan and you checked with a multimeter to see that when the switch side circuit is complete, that it turns on the 12v fan line, then the only possible problem assuming your temperature switch that plugs into the block is good is that the wires are shorted somewhere.

This is assuming that in the dead of winter your car is getting hot enough to turn the fan on, which mine hasn't since august, and I live in Georgia.

I don't know, maybe there cars have such things. All I know is my engine is pretty typical of EG cars, so I'm hoping yours is like mine. Really should ask though, what kind of engine do you have?

It sounds like there is one of two things going on to me. Since your fan spins when jumped, and you know the relay is bad and you replaced the switch with a NEW one it could be your engine isn't getting hot enough to turn it on or there is a short, break or too much resistance in the fan switch circuit. If you don't figure it out let me know and I can post the fan troubleshoot pages from the EG bible..

everyone is telling you to change out your thermostat because when the thermostat is worn out it freezes in the open position, or at least it is designed to do that... now, your fan is dependent solely on the heat of the coolant. therefore if your engine doesn't reach say 199 degrees the fan doesnt activate. on your swap are there two thermo sensors??? if so then one is a lower temp than the other. in hot climates I advise a 180 degree thremostat and the fan always hooked to the lower thermo switch. in cold climates just get 200 degree thermostat.

your thermo musta been stuck open and kept the water cool. I didn't think of that, in Ga that wouldn't work.
