Default so i melted a piston on my b16b, what next, i need opinions.

ok i melted a piston (#3) on my b16b, im guessing too much ignition timing, but im not blaming anyone. my plan now is to have the block bored and honed 10 over, drop in some forged pistons (10:1) on stock rods, run a block guard and call it a day. (and have it professionaly tuned this time) cars main purpose is canyon fun and hopefully some track fun (RR)

my question is, for around 320whp is the block guard even needed? i meen my rs ratio is 1.84 so i don't really have too much side loading, plus i here block guards cause hot spots, any opinions on this?

this was my set up before i melted the piston:

b16b swap turbochared (no china **** here) @9.5psi
turbo was a t3/t04e ball bearing stage III wheel .63 hot side
meutek manifold, pwr intercooler, tial 38mm, greddy bov
street tuned via aem ems + serial data gauge

also after i got on it hard, it would smoke from the exhuast but eventually go away if i didnt boost, i wasent using an oil restricor (per turbonetics tech support) any ideas why?

why go through all the troubles of overboring and aftermarket pistons just to run stock rods?

the oil restrictor lowers the oil pressure to a suitable level for the turbo that may be why it smoked. i wouldnt use the block guard with that r/s ratio. i wouldnt hurt to get forged rods but with his power goals the stock rods would be fine, the pistons are the first thing to go. was u running a really thick head gasket, those pistons have really high dome

thats like say you can spend 3,000 dollars on turbo kit parts and buy an ebay turbo, if your going to go into the guts of the engine you should replace the stock rods with even eagles for a mere 300 dollars

yeah, but the ebay turbo is junk, the rods are not. i agree with u i would get either eagle or scat but if hes on a tight budget and he doesnt want a ton of power he should be fine.like i said i would personally get the forged rods myself but everybodys different

i agree but eagle does not make rods for the b16b i think only crower and pauter and there like $700+

DON'T use a blockguard, your stock sleeves will put up with much more abuse without it. The main thing is to make sure you get a good tune because that is what killed your piston. Tell the tuner to be conservative on the fuel and timing and you will be fine.

Also, note that dome pistons aren't the best for forced induction but if you are conservative with the tuning you can run low to moderate boost/power levels on them without issues

this might come out of left field, but have you ever thought about putting a 1.8l crank in there? you already have the tall deck block. and it would make getting a set of rods easier.

For the price of some b16b rods you could get an LS crank, eagle rods and pistons

BTW I've got an extra B18a/b crank in great shape, no spun bearings or anything PM if you are interested
