Im no welder but i think get what you are thinking. Why not just unplug it if you have any doubt. It takes no more then 5 minutes probably to complete both tasks.

I'd do it to be safe, like he said, it only takes a few seconds. Make sure you have the radio reset code if its the stock stereo, or make a 9v battery on a cig lighter plug to keep the radio alive.

I've been to a muffler shop before that connected a device to the battery before they started welding, called a surge supressor/protector. here's a link to one http://www.toolweb.com/AutoBod...30818, and I'm sure you can find more on the web. This makes it so you don't have to disconnect the battery so you won't have to enter any security codes, etc. etc.

unless you are welding exhaust, you should definitely unplug the battery, and/or remove the ecu. removing the ecu is not completely necessary but your welder could quite easily fry it and then where would you be?

when i do exhausts i don't unplug the battery but i keep my ground clamp as close to where i'm welding as possible. this is kind of cheating though. i know it's not going to arc through the muffler, down the exhaust, through the rubber hangers and rubber motor mounts to put a surge in to the system that the fuses can't handle.

when i do anything on a frame or bodywork, the ecu get's pulled or the battery gets pulled. nothing like having to replace someone else's ecu.

why don't you just mock it up, without tack welding to the car?

I.e.: figure out the circum/holes of ur strut tower plates, cut/drill them out, sticked them on, figure out where ur flanges are going to be, make/weld on the flanges..then put those on, then measure the distance between? or something? it may seem like more work, but i mean, its better than cleaning/re-painting all those tack weld marks, no?

Cause you don't have ground wires from the engine to the chassis?

I built a waterjet machine and drained the water out after leaktesting it. As i had the pump going i decided to weld some more stuff to the outside of the tank and it burnt the pump up. oh well... haha

Just keep in mind of the current path.

Mostly it will never be a problem.

Current just doesn't magically flow into an open circuit. It follows the path of potential.
