Okay, I'm on my road trip to Las Vegas from Portland, OR. My little sister's 93 civic engine temp is fluctuating. from normal temp up to 3/4 sometimes almost up to redline then it stays there for few min or slowly goes down to normal or close to normal temp. This usually occurs during hill climbs and acceleration but sometimes it occurs at different times too. I went to an Autozone and bought a thermostat and replaced it at the store. I thought this would be the fix (since its cheap). After replacement and about 50miles the problem reoccurs. It was fine for a little bit then it starts to fluctuate again. I'm currently in Reno getting ready to go down to Vegas. Would this be safe? Things that I have notice are that the coolant resivoir is totally full and the radiator cheap is not that hot don't know if thats normal. I have driven the car about 600miles so far. What can cause this? I'm carrying a heavy load since I'm helping my sister move down to Vegas. Hope I made this clear enough.

BTW it's a 1993 Civic DX Automatic, water pump has been recently replaced as well as the thermostat.

Any help is greatly apprecitaed.

 

how fast are you driving *honestly*

 

speed limit 60-65 sometimes 70 honestly. Any suggestion?

 

try the fan switch, it might be working at times only....and if u temp keeps goin up is not safe to drive far

 

I had a turbo sohc that did exactly what you are talking about, but at 75+ mph... To make it stop I would either slow to 70 or turn on the heat (make sure its on fresh air not recirc)

 

What should I do with the fan switch? Where is it located?

 

do a search on the fan switch, is right by the thermo...
